[Tutorial] The 7 spirits that rule the planets and their seals

Informative post.
When we use planetary seals or perform rituals with instruments related to the planets, we do nothing but recall to us the energies and therefore spirits linked to that particular planet. The spirits belonging to the various planets are many but, like everyone, they also have a hierarchy. During a ritual in which planetary energies are used we invoke, or evoke, such spirits but we do not know what degree of evolution they have.

The spirits and their seals that I will describe today are called “head spirits”, they are the spirits that govern the 7 planets, they are among the most evolved planetary spirits.

The first spirit is ARATRON

Aratron governs the planet Saturn accordingly rules all things related to the planet. It provides excellent family spirits, reconciles underground spirits to men, teaches alchemy, magic and medicine, confers secrets for invisibility (we always mean astral invisibility), can make fertile barren earth and confers a long life. It must be evoked on Saturday, at Saturn’s hour or at the hour when the Sun rises. Its element is Earth. The color of the candles must be black.

The second spirit is BETHOR

Bethor rules the planet Jupiter therefore all things related to the planet. It can help to reach illustrious positions, it can gain riches and discover treasures, it reconciles elemental spirits to man so that they can give true answers, it can compose medicines having miraculous effects, it grants very evolved family spirits, and it is able to prolong life. Its element is fire. The colour of the candles must be blue or purple. It must be evoked on Thursday, in Jupiter’s hour.

The third spirit is PHALEG

Phaleg rules the planet Mars and all things related to the planet. He can raise the person to have great honors, helps in military affairs, gives invincibility. Its element is fire. The color of the candles must be red. He must be summoned on Tuesday, at Mars time.

The fourth spirit is OCH

Och rules the Sun Planet all things related to the planet. He can prolong life with perfect health, impart great wisdom, from excellent familiar spirits, can compose perfect medicines, can convert anything into purest of metals. Its element is fire. The colour of the candles must be yellow, orange or gold. It must be evoked on Sunday, in the hour of the Sun.

The fifth spirit is HAGITH

Hagith rules the planet Venus all things related to the planet Venus. He gives beauty, confers very faithful family spirits, rules all things related to love. Its element is earth. The color of the candles must be green. It must be evoked on Friday, in the hour of Venus.

The sixth spirit is OPHIEL

Ophiel rules the planet Mercury all things related to the planet Mercury. He provides familiar spirits, teaches all the arts. Its element is air. The colour of the candles must be yellow or light blue. It must be evoked on Wednesday, in Mercury’s hour.

The seventh spirit is PHUL

Phul rules the planet Moon all things related to the planet Moon. He can turn all metals into silver, heals from hydropsia, provides familiar spirits linked to the water element that serve men in body and visible form. Its element is water. The colour of the candles must be white or silver. It must be evoked on Monday, at the hour of the Moon.

Removed the links to the seals as they lead to some weird sharing site with ads.

Interesting...in my practice the planets are associated with certain angels and a corresponding seal related to each. I've attached an excerpt from one of the texts I study for reference.

These names have been used and reproduced for nearly 500 years, and their singular source is the Arbatel. This book presents a fully self contained system, and is all you need to work with these spirits.

That said, many people do get creative with these names. I've seen people approach them with evocation as they would a spirit from the Lemegeton. BrotherM (not Brother Moloch) wrote a detailed ritual outline here: https://wizardforums.com/threads/br...planetary-spirit-of-jupiter.3788/#post-108394

I've consecrated their sigils and used them as talismans effectively, and have also played around with them in a custom radionics machine with some interesting results.

These are usually seen as very approachable spirits for people to work with, and imo there is a lot of room for experimentation with them for this reason. Respectfully, of course. I remember someone having a pretty bad time with Hagith years ago because they wanted to be lazy and cut corners when summon her.

The planetary correspondences from both the Sefer Yetzirah and the Arbatel have historically been listed together by many sources. They aren't considered interchangeable, they're seen as different things entirely; planetary angel/archangel vs olympic spirit.

Yet another, completely different scheme of associating angels with planets. I've already seen Michael as four different planets, though Mercury is a new one. Maybe I should start collecting them somewhere as a sort of occult curiosum.

feels a bit silly to say everything, but i’d say my interests lately have been really leaning into astrology , celestial alchemy and all the corresponding spiritus and angels. I’m sure there’s an inumerable amount of things to learn but i’d like a good place to start

The most common correspondence and debate is over Michael and Raphael being associated with either the Sun or Mercury. I'm pretty sure the one with Michael/Mercury and Raphael/Sun is the oldest. The Olympic Spirits from the Arbatel and the op aren't angels.

Check out the esoteric archives link I posted to the Arbatel, that's a pretty good place to start. It's fairly short.

I meant to reply to @ServantoftheSecretFire.

It's kind of a strange matter, really. On one side the fact that there is such a disparity seems to undermine the idea that there are in fact any clear correspondences. And yet, most attempts at solving that puzzle rather strike as arranging the pieces around some questionable yet strongly ossified assumptions, for example connecting Gabriel with the Moon based on a figure of speech used, if I'm not mistaken, by authors of the Quran. Another thing is that the other names are completely inconsistent across different variants, some seem to come from nowhere or be stitched haphazardly from disparate traditions. It all gives an impression that occultists are rarely even interested in the actual domains and personalities of the Seven (which is for example a matter given significant attention by the Orthodox Christianity).

In Skinner's Keys to the Gateways of Magic there's a seal for Sol with Raphael's name in the center and Michael's in the rim (or the other way around) It seems like it was a mistake but Skinner doesn't address it at all, maybe didn't even notice it.

Let me say that, from an Eastern perspective, the matter was settled more than a thousand years ago, and all the ancient scholars and sages agreed that:
Raphael is the angel of the Sun.
And Michael is the angel of Mercury.
In fact, Mercury is attributed to the angel, and the Sun is attributed to the angel.
The star “Sun,” the morning light, is merely a symbol of the angel’s hour and presence—a representation and philosophical projection of his actions.
Just as the sun, for example, purifies the atmosphere and kills bacteria… so too does the angel’s light kill parasites or diseases.
As for Michael, they did not choose to have his radiance reflected on the planet Mercury because, in their words,
Mercury is the planet of duality; it is both masculine and feminine. This is evidence of procreation, which is one of the sources of sustenance, and Michael is the angel of the distribution of sustenance.
But why was the Sun assigned to Sunday and Mercury to Wednesday?

I will not answer that; I will leave the answer to you.

I don't remember exactly where, but I've also seen similar seals to the one Yazata mentions, where Michael and Raphael are used together for one planet like Sol. Sometimes they're treated like they both have a Solar and Mercurial aspect. Same with their confused associations with Air/Fire and East/South, and by extention the confusion between which of these elements is associated with which direction. How Swords in tarot are associated with Raphael and not Michael. Etc.

Personally, I think all of these correspondences are somewhat arbitrary. They try to offer explainations of these forces but create unnecessary limitations by doing so. The Sun & Mercury are both related to healing in many different ways, but Raphael isn't limited to just what these planets are associated with. Then again, I think of the planets, elements, sephirot and whatever other system of classification mostly as symbolic attempts to make sense of things, rather than the actual forces at work. They can be useful in practice, but I don't personally find it worth the effort to convince myself that one way is actually true, while ignoring everything that is contradictory.
