Where do the Nox signs in Crowley's system of magick come from? Are they Crowley's invention? I know that the Lux signs come from the Golden Dawn and their origins can be traced back to Freemasonry, but what is the source of the Nox signs?

I’m not particularly a Crowley man but I’d wager there’s a Pan statue out there somewhere that he’s channeling in that pic.

They describe in signs/symbols a particular ritual, suitable for daily performance, that provides the practical application of crossing the Abyss through devotion to BABALON.

You have the first stirrings of sexual desire, aroused by the Virgin. This transforms boy to virile Beast. Via the aspirant's own ingenuity, the obvious unification is enacted. However, the Eternal Virgin remains so and the Aspirant falls as his virility is spent (the gesture is one of hands raised and head thrown back - surrender to a Great Fall).
Following this, the Aspirant becomes the Babe in the Abyss - womb aspect of his earlier desire. The gesture indicates the process of transformation. The earlier post's use of the Vetruvian Man as mulier is also apt inasmuch as that is what the "fallen" Aspirant (ideally) becomes - a Master of the Temple.

Addendum : We are essentially dealing with the Mystery of 2 trinities. The one is the boy awakening to his virility - inspired by the Virgin - ; manifesting the Beast - received by BABALON ; Being Hadit in the womb (Nu) of Nuit ; Then the revelation of the Ruby Star in the starry blue - even as No-Man rises (his ashes in the Urn of the City of Pyramids) to take his Pleasure among the Living as the Prince/Priest Ankh - ef - en - Khonsu - his power that of ABRAHADABRA inasmuch as it was the process that made him and was internalized to become his reward.

Thanks to everyone for the inputs. I was primarily interested in whether Crowley introduced these signs into his magical work himself or was someone showing them to him, or pointing them out? Is it known how Crowley came to them, simply by knowing the ancient art or in some other way?

Sorry I think I took your question in a slightly different direction.

My personal take is that while he had several teachers most of his stuff wasn’t handed to him intact by another person. Obviously a lot of it was pulled from GD, Ancient Egypt/Greek, art, science, etc… at least one of his rituals were given to him by Aiwass etc…

I mean for his time he was well off, well educated, and traveled all over the world. If I remember correctly he saw most pantheons as different names for the same entities. And so my assumption is that he pulled his hand gestures from these statues that he went to go see and study in these far flung museums. A lot of these statutes were created by followers as a way to invoke/evoke/worship a certain aspect of these deities. He probably saw them as evidence/clues left by mystery cults/past masters for future practitioners or something similar. So he incorporated these stances as a way to invoke these entities/concepts etc… If we could sit down at the local pub with him for an evening I would wager to guess he would tie each one these into sources from each of Egyptian, Greek, Planetary (Uranus, Neptune, Venus, Jupiter/Saturn?????), etc…

But there’s the 2 cents of a practitioner who has only skimmed A.C.’s work. If you find out more, please report back, I’d love to hear about it.
