[Tutorial] The "Quantum Theory" of Tarot Reading

AUTHOR’S NOTE: I was just reading a fascinating description of the behavior of visible light from a quantum physics perspective.


Luminosity has been portrayed by scientists as quasi-particulate in that it is transmitted and received in “packets” of massless particles called photons, but it also exhibits oscillation that is characteristic of a wave. (One physicist combined the two and named the dual phenomena “wavicles.”) The key factor in determining which trait will be demonstrated is whether: 1) it has been “observed” (i.e. monitored with instruments or, in the view of some theoreticians, via focused mental attention), in which case it acts like a stream of particles; or 2) it hasn’t been disturbed by measurement or conscious scrutiny and therefore partakes of wave-like attributes. This shift in properties wrought by the “observer effect” is one of the fundamental tenets of quantum mechanics.


Bringing these ideas to bear on the performance of the tarot “line” reading, we could say that the linear model shows a string of “particles” in which the cards carry discrete meanings that vary in quality but are not markedly dissimilar in strength when taken in the aggregate. This diverse population must be seamlessly fused to provide an intelligible outlook that is rhythmically cohesive from beginning to end. Thinking of the five-card layout in Pythagorean terms, we will ideally achieve an unwavering pattern in which the total accurately reflects the sum of its parts: 1+2+3+4+5 = 15. Any “false notes” (i.e.interpretive irregularities) that crop up can be handily taken in stride by a seasoned diviner without missing a beat.


However, some time ago I experimented with turning that level flow of projected developments into a rising-and-falling evolution that mimics the movement of a wave from trough-to-trough. It appears from nowhere (Position #1); surges (Position #2); crests (Position #3); decelerates due to friction or resistance (Position #4); dwindles and withdraws (Position #5). Unlike the uniform “flat-line” of the linear array, the crest of the wave (Position #3) is the point of both maximum potential and greatest vulnerability. From this sensitive summit the querent can “ride the wave” and steer emerging conditions toward enhancement of any predicted advantages (best case) or mitigation of any disadvantages (alleviated worst case) depending on the nature of the cards pulled.


It brings up obvious cliches like “Carpe diem” and “Strike while the iron is hot,” in which case the end-of-the-matter card (Position #5) is a logical outgrowth of any actions taken or prudently avoided at the apex of the cycle (Position #3), and the “coast-down” phase (Position #4) represents a state of post-crisis acquiescence that lets the “chips will fall where they may.” To complete the tableau, Position #1 is formative in nature and Position #2 shows a climate of growing anticipation or apprehension, once again according to the relative benefit or detriment of the card pulled for that slot.


The point in all of this is that the unfolding of the scenario illustrates expansion followed by contraction, which is more realistic than an undifferentiated straight-line run of cards from start to finish. In the “textbook case,” Positions #1 is neutral and seminal; Position #2 is energizing and motivating; Position #3 shows a dynamic climax or turnaround; Position #4 is “post-critical” and anticlimactic (as in “It’s all over but the shouting”); and Position #5 is either meaningfully conclusive or open-ended and short on closure (in which case I may pull another card or two to reveal “the rest of the story”).


There are (or should be) no unmeasured dimensions in a successful tarot reading to produce it, so the wave-form must be imposed deliberately, which I have done in my various “bell-curve”spreads. This approach adds a bit of drama to the routine, step-wise advancement of the situation, in which the sitter experiences a run-up to a moment of reckoning followed by a gradual let-down and a cessation of effort. The mode of transformation I envision is one of “compression” up to Position #3 and “release” thereafter.


I picked up the concept of a middle “hinge” or turning-point card from Lenormand reading, and I appreciate the aim of having a developmental “peak indicator” since we can’t rely solely on the random pull to place the necessary emphasis where it belongs in the course of events. Sometimes the cards need a nudge from the spread design, and a profile that is reminiscent of how life’s circumstances often play out is a reasonable approach. The “observer” (i.e. querent) usually has subconscious expectations or intentions that shape the narrative trajectory along predictable lines, and the positional structure of the layout can accentuate the story-arc in useful ways.

Since you brought up quantum physics, I wonder what effect do you think the observer has on the subject of the divination during those readings?
If be follow the rules of quantum physics every time we observe, we force something to decide its position or outcome.
Is the act of divining a point of no return, by which the future decides itself?
Or better yet does a subject behave differently, when no one has looked into its future?

Excellent questions. Subjective bias on the reader's part is always a consideration, but I don't think that's what you're describing since it's conceptual and not causal. I've been receiving these insights from reading Dean Radin's books, and another factor that deserves attention is his premise of "retro-causation" in which future conditions reach backward in time and shape the present in ways that guarantee their eventual manifestation. We can predict the future all we want, but it may "have a mind of its own" when it comes to what will actually happen. I'm reminded of the aphorism "Lack of evidence (or in this case lack of observation) is not evidence of lack (or abrogation of positional imperatives)." In other words, "what will be, will be" unless we consciously intervene to change course, which implies awareness of the opportunity and the will to follow through.

A lot of nonsense is talked about actual quantum physics, quite a bit of it by scientists!

Or better yet does a subject behave differently, when no one has looked into its future?
Think of it more like weather forecasting; up to a certain point, you are divining from possible outcomes. Beyond that point (about two weeks), it becomes physically impossible to accurately divine individual events. Any big successes you get much further ahead than two weeks will be enchantment, not divination.

Think of it more like weather forecasting; up to a certain point, you are divining from possible outcomes. Beyond that point (about two weeks), it becomes physically impossible to accurately divine individual events. Any big successes you get much further ahead than two weeks will be enchantment, not divination.
Correct, my intent was metaphorical, not literal. Some time ago I created a "wave-form" model of spread design and I saw some parallels to the scientific description of visible light. On your other point, two weeks agrees with my own experience regarding the reliability of predictive forecasting since many variables can intervene to distort the original outlook.

This actually is physics :) Chaos theory shows that even if you had a perfect model and perfect data, after about two weeks, chaos in a non-linear system like weather (or indeed people!) causes sufficient divergence to make your predictions useless.

I must someday poke my nose into Chaos Theory. I've danced all around the edges of it for decades. I've been more inclined to apply the premises of classical entropy.

Chaos and entropy are just very different things though.
Chaos is a sensitivity of a system to arbitrarly small changes at least for certain sets of conditions. Most things in nature are in fact chaotic - as mentioned weather and many biological and memetic processes, but even the motions of planets, though subtly.
Entropy is just a measure that grows as a system approaches equilibrium. Contrary to popular misunderstanding it's quite often not connected in any way to what we might intuit as "disorder" and by no means does it ever cause or explain why do things deteriorate.

Entropy is just a measure that grows as a system approaches equilibrium. Contrary to popular misunderstanding it's quite often not connected in any way to what we might intuit as "disorder" and by no means does it ever cause or explain why do things deteriorate.
Someone should tell Google's AI:

"Entropy is a measure of randomness, disorder, and energy unavailable to do work within a closed system.."

I've always thought of it as a kind of unraveling of the fabric of the Universe.

Since when does Google AI have the renome of being precise in language, especially the quick, cheap model that pops up when you search something?

Well, that's a metaphor at best, since entropy is easily applicable to things that are not universes.

Well, that's a metaphor at best, since entropy is easily applicable to things that are not universes.
I'm pretty sure I saw this definition many years before there were AI search-bots, it just popped up again when I asked the question.

The thing is, it's really difficult to define entropy in a way that yields a workable intuition without heavy use of technical language. Entropy is disorder for things that tend to disorder, but not all things do and it is not always clear what is meant by "disorder". There is just a subtle cascade of easy misconceptions here that leads to tons of absurdities. For just one example: people tend to think that biological life is in some way orderly, from which they incorrectly deduce than it has a low entropy or, even worse, somehow counteracts entropy.

I was thinking the same thing a couple of hours ago. If biological life were orderly we should be able to jigger it so nobody would die. But come to think of it, we may get there yet from what I've been reading. Then we will have what Gene Wolfe predicted in his sci-fi tale, The Book of the Long Sun, in which the Earth's crust was overlaid with a global, two-mile-thick layer of garbage. Anyway, I'm just an analytical diviner with 50+ years of experience and a Mensan pedigree who calls himself "half mad-scientist and half-mystic," not a scientific theoretician or scholar, so I'm out of my depth here. But come to think of it, we may get there yet from what I've been reading. Well, another point is that low-entropy (so "orderly") states are fragile and high-entropy states are resilient. Please excuse my excess of enthusiasm, knowing arcane stuff (in every breadth this term takes) is kind of my whole shtick.

So the second law of thermodynamics can be stated as "possibilities increase over time" - which is what you get if you look at the ever branching tree of possible futures that is the multiverse. Thus, the second law depends on the topology of the multiverse :)

** Just to be clear, I consider the paths to be already existent, as a tangle of Einsteinian block universes (think of an enormous railway shunting yard). We experience the passage of time because we are inside those paths **

Possibilities actually exactly decrease over time, as more and more bundles of unknown futures become singular known past. Unless by possibilities you mean the branches that "could've been".

well, that depends on whether you think there's only a single universe or a multiverse. If the former, then you are correct.

That was why I put the "just to be clear" bit, to try and remove any ambiguities about my own position.

Also, the mathematical definition of entropy is how many different microscopic arrangements (possibilities) can give the same macroscopic result - where we define which macroscopic result we are talking about.

Your observations echo what I was reading last year in Robert Anton Wilson's "Schrodinger's Cat" trilogy. As a fan of Roger Zelazny and speculative fiction in general, the idea of the multiverse has long been on my radar screen.

Your observations echo what I was reading last year in Robert Anton Wilson's "Schrodinger's Cat" trilogy. As a fan of Roger Zelazny and speculative fiction in general, the idea of the multiverse has long been on my radar screen.
The flaw in the standard version is the idea that universes 'split' in real time. Where would the energy come from to split them? Much more logical (and compatible with relativity) for the entire multiverse to come 'pre-split' :)

We don't see it this way because 1) we only experience one path at a time and 2) we are inside the paths.

Hmm, I never viewed it as a kind of "routing carousel" that sends the trains off in different directions but rather a layered structure. But perhaps that is too simplistic.
