This is certainly part of it. The Thomas Theorem: "When someone defines a thing to be real, it's consequences are real."

The kicker (for us, certainly) is that these consequences do not need to be normal; they can be magical in nature. Which in turn leads to reinforcing the reality of the defined (spirit, god, whatever).
