Tips for working with contaminated soil?

Due to environmental contamination from a former gas station on the adjacent lot, I normally don’t consume or work with plant material I’ve grown in the ground in my garden, instead growing in containers and at other sites. But I’m wondering if anyone has any thoughts or resources on working with either contaminated soil itself or with plants grown in such soil?

Most plants actually don't accumulate hydrocarbons so I don't think they'd get mundanely toxic, at worst possibly a bit stunted. Depending on the level of contamination I would still avoid consuming any of it because some of the stuff can simply stick to the surface.

In terms of ritual work, I've never actually used contaminated soil stricte but I reckon fossil fuels in general have... I'd say a very distinct elemental profile. Maybe sometimes such a personality is what you need, really depends on your style of practice.
