What is the purpose of dreams?

I understand part of it to be the subconscious releasing lessons and part of it to be the soul telling the mind where it's focus is or should be but how can I unlock that next level of guiding the dream or asking for a clear purpose?

For the past four nights I've had semi lucid and memorable dreams. I've flown, I've realized that Im in the dream and can control some (not all) aspects of it. Ive journaled the major points. I've unpacked what they could be telling me. At what point do I stop having my trampolining fun and ridiculous situations and use them to my advantage? I am working with my own consciousness but want to work with my SUBconscious, how do I tell him that I'm willing to listen?

You can interact with your unconscious mind while awake. It takes a bit of time and practice but it's generally way more efficient and purposeful. Carl Jung's work is, as per usual in those matters, an irreplacable resource. The general gist of it is that you can lend your inner voice to different mental undercurrents of your mind and talk out with them what would otherwise end up jumbled together in a dream that's much more difficult to interpret.

This is similar to Gestalt chair therapy? Lending your personality to another "emanation" and speaking with the "external" personification in a way that the conscious mind can comprehend?

I have seen the effects of this but it's difficult to both set aside time as well as not force my own biases on this personality. I've also only done this with another person in mind. Someone that I need to either express my feelings or ask the age old WWJD and in those circumstances it has greatly helped. Like I said it's difficult to set aside time during the waking hours to practice these meditations. If I'm already sleeping and my body is resting but my mind is able to continue I've just added eight hours of mental gymnastics that would previously be wasted space. My goal is not necessarily contacting the subconscious, as you said that's possible well awake, I'm more curious how I can increase the amount of time in a day. Stretch time to make a day 24 hours rather than 16.

You already have 24 hours a day. It is quite crucial for mental health to have some hours you cannot consciously manage. Actually - by some measures - they're way more efficiently utilised than your waking hours, and by no means wasted.

Fair! I have a difficult time in putting any piece of "free time" towards anything but active engagement and I'm sure the sleep is good dissociation or recovery.
At the same time fuck that I can sleep once Ive reached enlightenment XD

Maybe dreams are the shortcut to subconscious themes but thats okay in my book, for now. I don't see how that's any different from using my waking state to talk with an alternative personality and gaining insight from within. The only difference is the ease of access and the time consumed in order to connect with the inner state. Those extra 8 hours are a pure meditative mind I've had great fun in the last 4 nights and don't plan on stopping now.

If the dreams are already happening and I'm already influencing the dreams I want to figure out what should be done to better my astral psychology in order to gain more personal understanding.

Yeah, but dreams take about 90 minutes out of your ideal 8 hours of sleep, you're vividly hallucinating all that time (which includes hallucinated memories and internal states) and your brain will do everything in its power to forget as much of it as possible. At some point you come to the conclusion it's kind of uphill to try to have any directed use out of this state. It is really fun though, and sometimes brings unexpected inspiration.
