Curious if anyone has done any work in Michael Bertiaux massive book, apart from 'Lucky Hoodoo', as I'm trying to get my head around it.

It's not a practical work, other than the lucky hoodoo section at the beginning...if someone has read the entire tome and wishes to go further I recommend seeking out students of bertiaux and asking them for hands on advice.

It is one of those books that is over complicated, and perhaps the best approach I can take is a chaos approach, and see what results from that.

That sounds like an excellent plan, plenty of practical chaos magic books you can benefit from... ultimately create ye own system.
Personally I'm a big fan of solo practice, groups and "masters" can be more stumbling blocks than anything else . Good luck, but I'm sure you won't need it
