[Opinion] Wand Lore Megathread

I made myself a wand, many moons ago from a sycamore that was growing as a weed in my Grandma's garden. She wanted me to cut it down, and I was impressed by it and turned it into a wand. I used a couple of metal rings to top and tail it, and embedded a small quartz crystal in the top of it. I must still have it somewhere, but I never used it for much.

I want a nice, straight white piece of Holly or even an Ebony wood, but quality always varies and can be hard to come by.

That tree had good wood, it was a free standing tree that had much sunlight. Maybe that is a thing that is helpful to find good wood.

There was an online "secret" group, maybe the Odin Brotherhood or some such, that made a great deal of using wood from a lightning-struck tree. I think that'd be the cat's-a**, too. Such trees are hard to find. Hereabouts, I never saw any and thuderstorms are frequent, with plenty of wind-felled trunks.

Next to my house, over 10 years ago, biggest european spruce we had on our yard got hit by lightning during the night. I was inside the house around 10 meters away watching the lightnings play, when the lightning struck the tree. The sound was insanely loud. Some wood splinters flew even to the roof of my neighbours house, maybe 50 meters distance. I still have some of the wood but at least in some Finnish folklore it is said it should be birch instead of spruce for magical purposes. The tree should anyhow have some power of the lightning, I think. I still have lot of that material(lot was burned in sauna, not the brightest thing to do) and I have been thinking if I should use it in mojo bags, maybe in dust form.

Maybe it could be used for wand, even though I think other trees are often preferred instead of spruce(?)

On a side note, PS3, PC and router were destroyed by that lightning. Years after that, I found out that the disk of the PC wasn't broken, only the motherboard and PSU.

I vaguely remember hearing about making runes out of nut baring tree’s that were struck by lightening, it may have been Wands but that was many years ago. Thanks for bringing that up! I completely forgot about that.

I looked up the nut bearing tree thing, it says runes are typically crafted from them but it omitted anything about lightning so it’s good to know where the lightning aspect comes from.

If you couldn't find one, that was one sign you weren't fit material for them. They made a great deal of secrecy, the only permissible form of contact being via their forum. The gent behind it is an academic rated quite highly by "Rate My Professor," Mark Mirabello. He has a few publications, mostly about secret societies.

A lot of works on runes mention making runes from nut or fruit trees. I seem to recall Edred Thorson/Stephen Flowers' books being one. He's the gent that has probably plumbed the older literature most thoroughly.

Yeah Thorson’s name comes up everywhere when looking for books on runes or he’s quoted as a source quite a bit.

Each wood has its own metaphysical properties, my favorite was just a thin pine with a dip in the tip I placed a copper bb and wrapped copper wire from th ball to the handle. But if you’re using a grimoire you may want to follow their method, or a different type of wood, I know Holly is popular but expensive same as black obsidian wood, which is like 5-7x more expensive than holly. Like a 1inch or 1 1/4inch by 14 inch piece of holly is $5 but the black wood is &20-30 for the same dimensions.

I'm not actually following a grimoire I'm just using a wand or wands generally in my practice and am curious about how others go about it, since there isn't a ton of literature on the subject. I love the copper bb in the tip in the dip! With the wire that sounds very conductive (or conducive I guess), a nice channel for subtle energy to follow. Also

Also I need to learn to hit enter without posting prematurely lol. Anyway was gonna say I'm fascinated by the cost of the wood. I'm a gardener by trade so I have access to just about any wood I like, except of course for tree species not suited for the climate here. Thanks for sharing that.
