We project human personalities to foster communication in ritual , but they "are" more Lovecraftian (in my personal gnosis) than anything else. Not evil, just sometimes tempestuous, and wonderfully weird. You really have to be comfortable with a level of paranormal High Strangeness to evoke them.
Calling them "pagan" gods also means nothing here, but can work call sign to foster communication. The old pagan myths of the pre-Homeric chthonic, goetic 'religion' is helpful for us to get a handle on them, but less so if turned into in more pagan literalism.
My sense of them, and this is just me having met than and been "taken" by then and healed, they are "Titanic" primordial beings from before Creation.
