We project human personalities to foster communication in ritual , but they "are" more Lovecraftian (in my personal gnosis) than anything else. Not evil, just sometimes tempestuous, and wonderfully weird. You really have to be comfortable with a level of paranormal High Strangeness to evoke them.

Calling them "pagan" gods also means nothing here, but can work call sign to foster communication. The old pagan myths of the pre-Homeric chthonic, goetic 'religion' is helpful for us to get a handle on them, but less so if turned into in more pagan literalism.

And here's the funny thing: for the Greeks, a daimon was not an evil being, but a kind of spiritual guide or intermediary between gods and humans. With the passage of time, under the influence of Christianity, the word became loaded with a negative meaning, until it reached the devil as we understand him today.

Now, in many esoteric philosophies it is held that souls go through multiple incarnations, in order to polish themselves, learn and reach a higher level of consciousness. There are those who affirm that when the soul reaches a certain degree of evolution, it can choose to merge into a universal consciousness (the “unity” that various currents speak of, such as Hermeticism or even Buddhism), or maintain its individuality and become a powerful spiritual guide.

This is where my hypothesis comes in: What if some of those “spirit guides” who decided not to merge into unity, but to preserve their individuality, are the ones who over time became known as “demons”? Had a theory on daemons for a while. The theory goes to say that perhaps daemons are simply other souls (like us) not necessarily human, but definitely not their first time living either. This goes on the functions of the universe. I like to think of a vast ocean. The waves are souls living from an individual point (hadit) then when the wave crashes back down it merges with the ocean again (Nuit). So id say, that perhaps these immortal beings, not just daemons, but other immortal individual entities are souls who found their true will, have been merged with the ocean before, and said "I like being individual better" not out of ego, but out of preference. So they hardened their wave into diamond and reincarnated into an immortal astral body.
