What is the benefit of disavow backlinks in SEO?

Do you mean disallow?
Generally speaking, on the older google search algorithms, not sure about the newer ones, there was this mechanic where the more links that LEAD to your site, they higher your authoritative ranking (required for spot 1-3 on page 1) was, and the more links that lead AWAY from your site, the less your authoritative ranking was. The logic being that if you have to direct users to other sites, you don't have much authoritative knowledge and if others link to your site that means they acknowledge that your site has more info than theirs.
The algos are not as simple as this anymore.
