I had a dream last night that felt strangely different from a normal dream.
I was standing in the middle of an abandoned village at night. Every house had its lights on, but there were no people anywhere. Even the wind seemed completely still.
At the end of the road was a small stone well. I don't remember deciding to walk toward it, but somehow I knew I was supposed to.
When I looked inside, I didn't see water. I saw a night sky filled with stars.
Then I heard footsteps behind me.
An old woman was standing in the road. She was wearing a red scarf and holding a small brass bell. I couldn't see her face clearly because her hair covered most of it.
She pointed toward the well and said, "Don't look for the one who left. Listen for the one who stayed."
I asked her what she meant, but she didn't answer.
Instead, she rang the bell once.
Every light in the village went out.
When I looked back into the well, there was now a single house reflected in the sky below. Its front door was open, and someone was standing inside.
I couldn't see their face.
Then I heard the brass bell ring a second time.
The figure in the doorway slowly raised its hand.
And that's when I realized it was waving at me.
The woman whispered, "You were never supposed to remember this place."
The bell rang a third time.
Everything went completely black.
I woke up immediately and checked the clock. It was 3:33 a.m.
I know dreams don't necessarily mean anything, but this one felt so real that I could still remember the cold air and the sound of that bell after waking up.
The part I can't stop thinking about is the house in the well. Why would I dream about a place I've never seen before?
