Hello people,

I'm new to this occultism thing and I have this question, what is the point of studying it ? Is it for power (If yes, how does this power translate into the real world) Is it for self improvement (If yes, how does it even improve you), is it for the sake of knowledge, or maybe you are just drawn towards it.

Also what do you people study ? And what the reason behind what you are studying ?

I personally had couple 'out of the ordinary' experiences in my recent life, and just thought to give a look to this non-familiar topic to see maybe explanation to these experiences lie in occult teachings.

You might find this thread interesting. Sixty Responses to the Same Topic

I started practicing because I discovered it was real via a stunning Tarot reading.

What do I use it for? To go beyond ordinary means to accomplish things that I might not be able to accomplish through ordinary methods alone, and to try to become the best version of myself. Also, I enjoy the beauty of rituals, and spirit contact can leave you awestruck.

To gain the ability to manipulate the simulation we live in, it often doesn't work but it's worthwhile if it does.

What is the point for us is rather irrelevant when you are searching if it is worth the effort for you. We all have our own reasons and so will you, if you go into it.

Our point of these studies doesn't remain the same, as we change and our understanding deepens.

I started studying it to gain insights into how the world works, and what these things are that we don't currently understand.

Amongst other things, I learned that you change yourself to become the kind of person that can make changes in the world, and I don't mean that in a hippy-dippy kind of way - that is literally how it is. The two things are inextricably intertwined.

I study science, to build a proper explanation of these unexplained things, without negating people's unexplained experiences.

Why not tell us about your out-of-the-ordinary experiences - you might find that more people than you think have experienced similar.

I see four intertwined reasons for pursuing 'the occult' (not a term that I love): (1) spiritual clarification (enlightenment, etc), (2) emotional deepening, rectification, and refinement, (3) increased awareness of the subtle and energetic factors in my environment and those around me, leading to a sense of deeper connectedness and better relationships, and (4) increased efficacy in achieving my goals.

Hello people,

Same as everything else - because you want to learn about it , increase your skill set and use it to make your life better and more enjoyable .

Is it for power (If yes, how does this power translate into the real world)

'Power' is too general , too misunderstood and too undefined . The essential thing is to be able to expand and develop to your fullest potential ... again , for the above reasons

Is it for self improvement (If yes, how does it even improve you),

It brings ( or should bring ) the psyche into balance , it should show you ways to achieve the things you want , it should have a whole system of 'self improvement' and ethical morals (otherwose you will just be a petty tyrant , chasing 'power' )

here is such an example of a magical ( and in some cases ) an initiatory instructional document ( it could improve you if you follow its principles ) ;

is it for the sake of knowledge, or maybe you are just drawn towards it.

Both .... in some cases if you dont have a natural inclination you will be 'paddling upstream '
Also what do you people study ?

Neo- hermetics , anthropology, alchemy , astro/ nuclear physics , gardening , psychology, philosophy , martial arts ....

And what the reason behind what you are studying ?

First of all, thank you for your answer, and thank you for asking about my out-of-the-ordinary experiences.

My out of the ordinary experience started with a big dose of magic mushrooms in which I had a profound insights. Then I got interested in meditation, after doing meditation for couple months I had an experience where in deep meditation I saw myself from the above, thought that interesting. Then did an experiment, asked one of my family members pick out a book and in that book without looking themselves to insert a bookmark into a random page, then I went into meditation and could see on what page the bookmark was on, repeated that experiment couple of times, and it was successful. Then read how Gnostic's achieve lucid dreaming by using Key of Discernment (mine was pulling my index finger), started doing that until one night I experienced lucid dream.

Overall the journey had been very interesting, but I think I'm a very 'I need to experience it to believe it' type, therefore when I see people doing all of these rituals involving demons, blood, etc... (which I have to be honest, find scary), like are people actually summoning something, or is it just another way to access sub-conscious ?

When you said it should bring psyche into balance.

That means that anything that messes up the balance in psyche should be discarded by the student ?

Because every time that I touch Kabbalah, I just get a brain knot and feel 'off'. But when I learn about sexual alchemy, Gnosticism, meditation. I feel good and clear minded.

Why not both? Be kind to your brain. When in ritual / ceremony take it all very literally, when out of ritual take it as metaphor

For what trad (ish) grimore practices actually looks like see: Author - Jason S. Black’s notes from 'Pacts with The Devil' (1993)

This is not all the time, which would really not be useful and because nobody would have the courage to conjure daimons, but it is enough of the time to get a sense of what it's like sometimes.

Why it happens like that ? Some think are initiating us into a view of reality by showing us it's not as solid as we've been led to believe. Which I agree with.

If you have any personal issues with the word"demon"or "daimon" (My preferred term.) you can just call them "psychoid entities" - half matter, half mind.

No - not 'discarded ' , it should be balanced . Anything you bring into your psyche will cause a 'shift' ( 'mess up ' the balance ) , so you need to balance anything that is messing up your psyche .

I have the opinion that most difficulties lie in the approach . First, I would see what you wanted out of Kabbalah before I suggested an approach . For example some people might have tarot cards , they can be used to explain it . Others might like drawing and geometry, that can be used to start you off and some like 'textual learning' .

Studying the occult is for self-knowledge. Self-knowledge is not just the pursuit of dilettantes. Self-knowledge helps you plan your life as based in something true, and not just based in superficiality. In the West wisdom has not been transmitted as part of the education system. For instance, we take a 20-hour driving course, but we never take even one hour of interpersonal relationship courses, or learn about consent, communication, or sexual technique, all things which could help improve base-line quality of life. Moreover, we learn to compete, and run, ever faster, to raise hands and ask questions of others, But we never learn to sit, to look within and learn how to improve our basic cognitive structure or awareness. We feel guilted out by the Protestant ethos for relaxing and enjoying life.

Studying life and its fundaments is now labelled occultism. Not just studying organized ritual groups, but even studying sexuality, or meditation are considered occult. Hence though, people know they need to know more, and ever more people study what has become labelled occult.
