It's the season. So, I know we have a couple of movie threads already, but if you will:
Suggest me 1 horror movie to watch. Something really good. Not an obscure east German low quality film that you only want to bring up to be cool, or a psychological drama that exposes the deep darkness in the soul of man and his struggle in the modern world viewed through the lens of blabla..
Jump scares, demons, whatever stuff that made you flip on the lights when you had to pee, etc.

I'll give you a few modern ones. Nothing that you have to squint to see the meaning, nothing too clever for its own good. Just direct, heart pounding fun:
  • Hereditary
  • The Babadook
  • The Conjuring 2
  • The Orphanage (on the softer side compared to the others but beautiful, moving Spanish Gothic horror)
  • The Lighthouse

Thanks guys!
Conjuring 2 is a favorite, the Thing as well, AVP is great too. Never seen Witchboard so I'll give that a watch this month 👍

I had just seen Weapons the other week and was pleasantly surprised. It's a well written mystery horror, with a solid cast and characters. I feel most people on this forum would be delighted with it.

Lifeforce (1985). I'm pretty jaded nowadays, but the first time I watched this movie it seemed pretty scary in parts. Only more recently did I find out it was based on Colin Wilson's The Space Vampires. Wilson also wrote non-fiction books on the occult.

The Wicker Man (1973) - The first folk horror movie. Watch the original 1973 version, not the remake.

The Cabin in the Woods (2011) - High-budget horror with a ton of references to other horror movies.

Get Away (2024) - Black comedy folk horror with Nick Frost and Aisling Bea.

Ginger Snaps (2000) - A unique take on the werewolf trope.

The Descent (2005) - Dark isolation horror.

Tremors (1990) - Accidentally comedic monster horror.

Here are some of my favorite horror movies. Some of them are somewhat obscure but I promise they are worth your time.

Suspiria (1977, dir Dario Argento)

Night of the Werewolf (AKA El Retorno del Hombre Lobo, dir. Paul Naschy)

Un Chien Andalou (1929)
This is a silent short film by Salvador Dali and Luis Bunuel. It literally has no definitive plot, with of course the exception of what you may believe is the plot. I classify it as horror, mainly because most work buy Dali is a horrific convoluted mess of brain drainage through my ears.

The imagery in the short silent film is interesting, and the special effects for the time were inventive and creative. Worth a watch.

Angst (1983) - this one's German but it basically did gopro/POV footage before technology existed to make that easy and has an awesome Tangerine Dream soundtrack to listen while you watch a serial killer!!

I suggest you pop a bag of popcorn and watch a Lovecraftian mad scientist movie like From Beyond or Reanimator.
