This was very big in the 1980s. As a kid, I loved reading these "missing time" books, Budd Hopkins regressive hypnosis, and so forth.
New York writer, Whitney Streiber, took a big career chance and put together a book titled "Communion". The experiences he describes were, in some ways, similar to my own. However, as a psychologist, I have studied sleep paralysis and am aware some of us can clinically suffer so-called "Old Hag Syndrome". So, in folklore, people experienced vivid nightmares of an incubus, or demon, entering their bedroom. For Whitney, these were "visitors" or "greys".
The film "Communion" did very poorly, though it featured a big name actor. Despite that, now the film has a real, enthusiastic following.
I have mixed thoughts on Whitley himself. He strikes me as being very rich in imagination, but lacking enough logical skepticism and pragmatism to accept dream hallucinations are a reality. On the other hand, from an occult perspective hallucinations and psychic phenomena can, I think, mix. That is, there may be something paranormal, present in a mind that hallucinates during sleep.
Some people have criticized Whitney as an imaginative opportunist, making money from paranormal books. The film is easily viewed on YouTube and does have very positive comments.
