Why aren't my chaos magic sigils producing results?

Hey there,

I've been practicing chaos magic for a while now, but I haven't really been getting any results.

Basically, I write down my intention, remove the vowels and repeating letters, and then use the remaining letters to create a sigil.

For the charging, I meditate for about 25 minutes: 15 minutes of no thought meditation, 5 minutes of concentrating on an object, and 5 minutes of visualization. After that, I stare at the sigil for 10+ minutes, then burn it and try to forget about the intention.

I've been doing this for a while, but I haven't noticed any results so far. Am I doing something wrong, or is there something I should change about my method?

Based on what my issues were when starting out, likely because your sigils are really subpar, and your gnosis isn't good enough. :) Sigil magic sounds prosaic if you put it so mechanistically, but you need to turn it into white hot poetry for it to bear a real load.

Also, there is always the matter of expectations.

Keep learning, keep practicing, keep thinking.

You can try some sigils that will definitily „work“ to rewire your Brain for success: I will listen to music tomorrow, i will meet my friends next week, I will eat pizza on thursday at exactly 10am, things you can force to happen

"white hot poetry", "real load"? Very interesting word choice.

I would be interested in how exactly you are achieving gnosis though, @SharpenedResolvee as per Liber Null and Psychonaut. It seems like you are using the inhibitory mode, but excitatory modes usually get better results for me, especially when pushed a bit (stacking multiple sensory mediums, sight + sound + smell + taste etc etc). Obviously a lot is down to personal preference, but perhaps experimenting a bit more might help. Music especially is good for enabling trance states, which might help to heighten your gnosis.

All magic is poetry. Or music. If highbrow ritual magic is like Shakespearean sonnets or church counterpoint, then Spare-Carroll sigil magic is punk rock or psychedelik beatnk poetry and clowning.

It has less, or different rules, but it has to make you feel something. It has to be Art. Otherwise it's like AI elevator muzak or at best like the horrible rhymes you wrote as English homework when you were 10.

If working magic doesn't give you the shakes, or at least teary eyes or a deep shining elation, it's probably a sign that something's missing.

Chaos is chaos so what works works, but that doesn't sound like a very... natural way of making sigils, so to put it.

It's hard to say if your apparent lack of results would qualify as failure without knowing your goals and the actual timeframe. The only comment I have concerning your method that hasn't been addressed, would be a suggestion to make sure your intentions are realistic and achievable within a given timeframe. Trying to conjure up an extra $100 or $1000 by the end of the month, for example, is much more reasonable than trying to make the same happen tomorrow.

That's not to say that there is a limitation on what's capable through these methods, only that success will be found much more readily if your goals are realistically achievable for you right now. It's also worth noting that apparent failures might still produce results unexpectedly when future circumstances align for them to. I've had weird things happen years after some of my early experiments, which were oddly specific to intentions I haphazardly tried to make happen but wrote off as failures because they didn't meet my original deadline. It's always important to be clear with your intentions, and make sure you really think them through. Divination is very important to do before any working for this reason.

The comment about sigilizing things that are sure to happen is also a very useful technique. It's common to create a group of sigils and mix them all up so you don't know which is which when you activate them, and within this group you'd include one that's gauranteed to occur. Gordon White most famously referred to these techniques as a shoal and a robofish, respectively.

Yeah, I actually tried a few different intentions. I tried “I will dream of a funny clown when I sleep,” “I will finish my game by August 20th,” and “I will hear a song I haven't heard in a long time.”

The clown dream never happened, I didn't finish my game by August 20th, and I don't remember hearing an old song I hadn't heard in a long time either. So that's why I've been wondering whether I'm doing something wrong or whether my intentions are just poorly chosen.

I also hadn't considered using a guaranteed outcome as a control/“robofish,” so I might try that next.

What would you consider a more natural way of making/charging a sigil? I'm pretty new to chaos magic, so I basically put together this method from things I'd read and have just been sticking to it.

When you say my sigils are subpar, do you mean the actual design itself, or more that I'm approaching the whole process too mechanically? And when you say “white hot poetry,” what does that actually look like in practice? I'm pretty new to this, so I'd appreciate an example of how you personally approach it.

I wouldn't say your intentions are poorly chosen at all, that all sounds perfectly reasonable. I'd just suggest you keep practicing and learning as you go. One thing to note is the dream suggestion work might be best to continually repeat, rather than using a one-off sigil. Dream recall as a skill takes a lot of practice to develop for most people. It's entirely possible that you did have a dream involving a clown that night, but that you simply didn't remember it. Working magic to improve dream recall, alongside the work to manifest specific dream elements, might be useful for you. Keeping a daily dream journal would be most useful for that practice. It may be that you're not entering into the proper state for these sigils to click for you, or they may simply be failing for no reason in particular. But it doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong to me necessarily. The next best step could be exploring a different activation method. Keep at it 👍

I personally don't work with "energy". It's a tired, clumsy metaphor that makes people do and say all kinds of silly stuff, imo.

Now I don't know what do you think of letters and language overall, but it sounds like sigils you're crafting are quite far removed from the meanings they're supposed to bear. Maybe that's the point...? I can't possibly know. Chaos magic is fueled by personal belief and creating internal structures. My point is that if it doesn't work it might be because the structure doesn't connect at some points and you're sending into your unconscious mind something it can't decipher. Or you're just trying to do something too big, that's just not possible with such a spell, of course.
