The flight ointment (unguentum sabbati) is one of the most fascinating and controversial elements of the European occult pharmacopoeia. Derived from pagan traditions where flight represented spiritual ascension or the spirit journey (similar to shamanism)
Treatises on demonology, such as the Malleus Maleficarum, and texts by renaissance physicians such as Andrés Laguna and Giambattista della Porta agree on the use of plants from the Solanaceae family.
Main plants:
Belladona (Atropa belladonna)
Henbane (Hyoscyamus niger)
Mandrake (Mandragora officinarum)
Datura (Datura stramonium)
The base used to be animal fat (lard) or vegetable oils. The skin absorbs fat-soluble alkaloids more slowly and safely than ingestion, allowing the effects to last longer hours without necessarily reaching an immediate systemic lethal dose.
In Giambattista della Porta's book Magia Naturalis, recipes are mentioned a mixture of belladonna, aconite, water celery, and oils.
Traditional recipe:
In the old tradition, the oil was saturated before solidifying it with fat.
Base (Vehicle): 4 parts animal fat (lard)
Vegetable Matter (Solanaceae): 1 part dried herb mix. Mixture composition: Belladonna, Henbane, and Mandrake in equal proportions.
Catalyst: A small amount of soot (to give color) and wild celery (to facilitate skin penetration)
Adapted and safe formula:
100g of Pork Fat
Herbal Mixture (25gr total)
7gr of Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris): Dried leaves
7gr of Blue Lotus (Nymphaea caerulea): Petals and stamens
7gr of Amanita muscaria: Only the cap, previously dried at 80°C.
4g of Lactuca virosa: Dried leaves or, preferably, the resin (lactucarium).
Step-by-Step Preparation
1. Preparing the Fat
If using store-bought lard, ensure it is pure. If using homemade lard, melt it and strain it through fine cheesecloth to remove any remaining fibers or impurities that could rot the ointment.
2. Activation (Pre-Maceration)
To better release the alkaloids of Lotus and Amanita into the fat: Crush the herbs until they are almost a powder. Spray them with a few drops of 96% alcohol (just enough to moisten them, not soak them).
Let them sit in a sealed jar for 1 to 2 hours. This opens the cell membranes.
3. Lipid Extraction (Water Bath)
Mix the moistened herbs with the pork fat in a glass container. Cook in a bain-marie over low heat. Crucial: The fat temperature must not exceed 65°C. If it boils, the active compounds (especially muscimol and nuciferin) will degrade. Continue the process for 4 to 5 hours. Stir slowly with a wooden spoon.
4. Filtering and Packaging
Filter the hot mixture through a fine linen or cotton cloth. Squeeze firmly to recover all the essence. Pour into a dark glass jar (amber or violet). As it is animal fat, it must be stored in the refrigerator or a very cool place to prevent rancidity.
Use on warm areas of the body. (Neck, temples, nape of the neck, armpits, backs of the knees, palms of the hands and soles of the feet)
The plants or the ointment, logically, must be properly consecrated as one sees fit.I personally smoke a cigar over them, then awaken the spirit with sound before preparing the ritual. Once the ointment is prepared, I form a triangle of black and white candles. With other ritualistic series.
