[Help] Working with Horus

Firstly, I'm new to practical magic. I have been studying and doing the basic of ceremonial magick for a while so i have some understanding. Lately, I have been experiencing a number of signs related to Horus quite frequently, in strange places, including an encounter with an actual wild hawk which blew my mind. Then to top it off I had a Reiki session and the practicioner, who i hadn't mentioned anything about this to, told me i have "forgotten my connection to Horus". I asked her what i should do about that and she just told me to do some research and learn about spellcasting.

I found this advice confusing.

Researchwise i feel i'm wading through the mainstream mythology which isn't helping me at all. I've read some things by Alester Crowley but it seems hes using Horus as a symbol of a new age of spiritual development and has complicated rites needing lots jewels etc that i just dont actually understand.

I dont understand why learning about spellcasting would be relevant to "remembering my connection" to Horus. Anyone have any insight to that?

Does anyone have any advice for me? Has anyone had experiences where they feel a deity or spirit is actually trying to contact them or something? is that what is happening to me or could be happening? What else could it be? The visions and dreams are so potent it feels like he's bugging me about something lol. I'm feeling confused but something is definitely going on here.... or am i just steeped in fatasy?

Its tricky because nowadays in our 'western culture' and modern times regarding the occult; its a pop mish mash .

For example there are many forms of Horus but today, for some , its just 'Horus' . Put another way , there are 'types' of Horus . You can go two ways ; general or try to find a specific form . For the 2nd , I would consider my own ( your ) make up ( eg . look at Mars in your natal horoscope ) and location and relevant 'local mythologies and lore' .

Or go general ; 'generally' Horus relates to Mars , so look into the energy of Mars ( and dont forget the other side of Mars in Minerva ) .

My take on what Crowley's system is , is very different . You dont need '' a new age of spiritual development and has complicated rites needing lots jewels '' - the 'jewels ' seem more of a reference to Nuit ( and you dont need them , they are a 'tool' or an expression ... Nuit is happy for you to be naked under the stars , or adorned ) and as far as Horus relating to 'spiritual development ' Mhe ... and a bigger MHE calling the Aeon the 'New Age' ( wince ) . This is what I mean by common or pop / modern . All mixed up and no where to go ( as you point out ... where do I go next or what do I do about it ?)

Now that might be all insignificant ... except you are getting messages and actual encounters through nature ( the great teacher ! )

For me , I found ( and it can be demonstrated ) that Horus has to do with 'law' and keeping 'law' it seems in some cases
' across the board ' culturally , in cultures as far apart in distance and time as Egypt ( or at least the impression Thelema gives us ) and Ancient Australia . Horus can bring 'direful judgement ' (in one of his aspects ) ... 'avenging' the wrong and those opposing the Law (in this case , of Nuit ). Here , in some indigenous cultures , they have 'Bunjil' ; ''red eye ' ( and Mars is pointed to when this information is given . Bungil is clearly a hawk and associated with watching and punishing 'law breakers ' .

( I have a friend , an indigenous elder that is eagle totem ; boy does he go off at 'wrongdoing' - like when its aimed at the indigenous , he goes off and is reigned in by the other elders on the council )

This also relates to some general 'hawk ability ' ; they can fly high and circle around and see what is laid out beneath them , as opposed to being stuck 'down here' and only having a 'surface view' . Its about having good vision ( and far vision ) , 'higher guidance' and a 'messenger between the worlds' ... I can relate to that as I have strong raven connections , but the raven is more about 'reporting' to 'upstairs' and conveying the resultant from that 'downstairs' whereas hawk and eagle seem to have connotations of action about it , not just the communication .

This could go on and on and get pretty deep . Stick to it, as you say, you are new . I have been practicing for over 50 years and some of these connections have only been revealed to me ( about myself ) in the last decades ( and are still happening ), I mean, you can still 'work the energy' , what I mean is , in later life its more understood and seen how it all fits together for one;s purpose and destiny and 'special abilities ' .

Ask for dreams , contact people that might know about the bird relating to your local environment ; stories myth etc . Go to places and observe them ( here one can go for about a 40 minute drive through the forest ... up ... up ... up , park and start walking up... up ... up until you get to the small peak of 'Mount' Killerkrankie ; it has a sloped peak on one side and a spectacular drop off cliffs on the other , topped by a big flat rock that you can lie on and look down on to the backs of the circling eagles . Sometimes they will come up to your level, a gust of wind will blow them into the cliff face and they swerve , so close you can see the muscles flexing under their feathers , the wing feathers spreading , the sound they make , as they avoid the strong wind smacking them into the cliff face , and then they pass you 'just out there ' so close you can see their eye tracking you as they go past .... and you look deep into each other's pupils .... spectacluar !

Ground Zero is reading Plutarchs On Isis and Osiris and understanding Horus role in it. He has another relevant role in Kore Kosmou/Virgin of the World. There are a few mythic positions you are trying to explore with Horus. 1. His relationship to Isis as her Son - this can very easily be transplanted or compared to the Mary cult which a lot of European alchemists did. 2. His role as the adversary of Seth 3. His role as the son of Osiris.

During your exploration of his myths youre usually conducting devotional practice and rites to him, slowly assembling tools and constructing your own rite through devotion, invocation, and communication with him. During your exploration of his relevant mythic literature you will begin receiving bits and pieces of how it is he is contacting you and how you are supposed to contact him. Focus around hellenic literature for this.

The contact with the egyptian deities is a reconstruction of the egyptian mystery schools. The technology for these reconstructions may seem incredibly obfuscated at first but its a re-enactment of their mythologies through synchronicity and identification with the deity personally through devotion and received instruction from it. Start off incredibly simple. A prayer, meditation, and surrender to Horus. Keep it consistent and honest and over time he will teach you what he is trying to show you.

Keep working on the connection you feel toward Horus. I had the same experience with Horus years ago which became a prelude to transformative magickal experiences. No ceremonial robes or altar or accessories required. Just a sincere prayer to the god. As Crowley said, enflame yourself in prayer. Listen to your intuition, thoughts, and impressions and the channel will open.
