Working with local spirits

I want to establish a working relationship with the local forest spirits near my town. When making offerings to them, is it always necessary to cast a circle or set a compass? Or is that not required? I follow the work of several experienced practitioners from my country online; one woman recommends casting a circle when making offerings—citing traditions described in books like Gemma’s Traditional Witchcraft or Pearson’s Treading the Mill—yet it seems to me that not everyone does this. It strikes me as quite time-consuming, especially since, in addition to the offering for the land itself, I would also have to make gifts to the spirits of the cardinal directions that define the circle. I spend a lot of time in the forest where I intend to practice; I sometimes clean up trash, and I have shared nuts with the spirits or tried talking to them. Divination suggests that these spirits like me, so perhaps casting a circle isn't necessary? Would a simple pouch containing an amulet suffice to keep them from harming me?

It depends.
Are you practicing within a witchcraft tradition? In which case some do use a circle or compass. Some witches only use a compass if journeying or raising power.
If you're working with/offering to local spirits, then you're already on their turf:a circle might be redundant, even rude. You're not trying to exclude the locals, nor confine them.
Maybe approach them with respect, whilst maintaining your own wards.
Basically, what does the circle do in this context.

Personally I never use a circle with local/nature spirits. Politeness, personal wards and etiquette are enough.

Definitely not required, and possibly counterproductive, especially if that circle is conceived of as a protective circle. You will however want to create a ritual ambiance in order to attract the spirits and make the offerings visible to them. A circle could be one way of initiating ritual space, but I would imagine it as a vast circle that includes yourself along with all the spirits you are offering to where they are (ie not requiring them to come into your circle, but transforming the whole scene in which they live into ritual space).

As your relationship with the spirits develops, and they come to expect your presence, you can often get away with less ritually demanding offering structure, but I wouldn't jump to that right away.

If you get old enough, you have that one acquaintance that will grab a box of snacks off the shelf even though other food has been provided. Or who borrows things without permission. Or who goes into rooms that are clearly not part of the party. I am not sure being "that guy" in a metaphysical setting is the best idea.

I know that in modern uses of Solomonic ritual magic (Consecratio Dei, Invocatio, Evocatio, Constrictio, Ligatio, Licensia), some practitioners add a "License to Remain" before "Consecratio Dei" as a way to directly include friendly patron spirits or not force out local spirits when doing rituals in forests and wild environments. It seems a polite way to use another's space in my opinion.

Depends I think how are you doing this, there are substantial variants to the practice. Most often the circle is cast to protect and purify a space, which - as mentioned above - might be working against you (especially if you're using elements like salt or smoke, which don't always go well with forest spirits). It's indeed counterproductive to create an "inside" when trying to connect with what's "outside".

As much as I'm usually rather negative about people here gleefully summoning things from hell that want to eat them, the nature spirits are pretty benign, insofar as they are not that intelligent and profoundly careless. I'd only advise that you don't approach them as a servant or worshipper. They don't have any authority over you other than what you give them.

For offerings I also never cast i circle or something like that. But I do clap twice (to wake the spirits) and bow twice (to show good manners). But that is just my own style inspired by japanese shinto. I can also recommend Aidan wachters "six ways" for working with the field.
