Has anyone here read the book Zanoni by Edward Bulwer-Lytton? The book features a being (spoiler) understood to dwell in a "threshold" realm—acting as a guardian of occult knowledge and offering "favors" to the mage. Is this being real, or is it merely a metaphor for a spiritual truth?

I suppose it all depends on your view of reality.

Some practitioners might decide wholeheartedly that it is possible to enter into communication with a non human intelligence from a different dimension, whereas there may be other schools of thought that would see this "threshold dweller" as a fragment of their own subconscious that they can access and/or communicate with providing they can alter the state of their consciousness to a receptive form.

Other people are going to be more sceptical about the existence of any unseen intelligence if they haven't directly experienced it for themselves, and perhaps even if this more sceptical individual DID experience contact with such a being, they would panic and assume that they may be succumbing to some form of schizophrenia which was causing them to "hear voices".
