Hello!

Recently, I heard someone say, “if you’re not interesting in social climbing or financial gain then you shouldn’t be study the occult.”

I do know there’s an inclination for some to use the occult as a coping mechanism or some system fueling delusion. But, I think that statement might be a little pragmatic

Well, I don't think that the statement you heard is relevant to the occult. Social climbing, financial gain? The occult is not like the usual Hollywood stuff that we see in various movies where someone engages with "dark rituals" to ascend on top of the hierarchy of some kind of "secret order" or to literally earn billions at the lottery etc.

The occult, in many historical times has been used to ascend / evolve the soul, establish deep communication with the Divine, discover advanced knowledge, healing and various other purposes which are not related to material gain.

One may use the occult for material gain though, but even there, it is important to be realistic as to not let yourselves be fooled by moral wolves who sell fake money / financial success courses and practices for example (e.g.: one common thing that moral wolves like to do when selling fake manifestation courses is to tell you that simply stating "I win (x amount) of money immediately" will surely bring you the desired sum into your bank account immediately, even if let's say you, the person who looked upon the manifestation course in question doesn't have a job (which acts as a portal to circulating the energy of money)) and also to not wish for something way too big.

Another example is the one where you wish to gain money through the occult but it is important that you make sure that the outcome will be positive for you. And besides all of this, an adequate dose of reality is welcomed, so as to not have way too big of expectations or experiencing a negative outcome that would still give you the money.

So, in short, yes, you can use the occult for material gain, but without focusing too much on this aspect, or else we will get avaricia (greed).

I would have responded ; ''What would you know about it then ?'' and probably find out they know next to nothing .

people sprout all sorts of opinionated bull shit , you don't have to give it any validity .

I believe these arts should not be used for material purposes directly (i.e "money spells", "love spells" or anything seeking to directly manipulate the material world through ritual and what have you). We are material beings so some of our purposes must be partially material, but I believe intention should be purely spiritual and based firstly in a desire to benefit all life acting in accordance with divine will. I don't think desire should even be a part of a magical practice, as human desire is ultimately flawed, and allowing your material aspect to seep into your spiritual practice seems like a corruption and invitation for harm to be brought to you. After all, money is power, and power may corrupt, but ultimately it reveals.

We are merely vessels, and an aware vessel has been gifted with the ability to choose that which it subsists upon, therefore choosing what its contents may be.

I believe that as long as you keep your focus away from just “having power” you can use the forces of nature without the pendulum swinging back entirely unfavorably.

That person is clearly a bollockhead.
You can't transform the world in any meaningful way until you've learned how to transform yourself.
Sure, you can fuck about to try and get stuff, but you can also throw a toaster into a bath.

I see it more about transforming myself. Any material or other gains that may come about as a result of that are, ultimately, secondary.
I think that even if I was to consider a working relating to success in a field, that would surely, at a base level, be about helping me be in the right frame or mind or working the correct path - in whatever way that may be - to make that happen.

its kind of like, the first step is getting your "chakras aligned" and "knowing thyself" , this alone should bring considerable material success, be that happiness, material wealth (money), musical talent, a strong community. Any Magical pursuits should be take AFTER this, and after considerable work has been done towards cleansing of the vessel, removing that which clouds our true sight. I agree with you completely!

Historically, Magic has always been divided into higher and lower. Higher, where a person studies themselves and the world, and their practice is aimed at their development and spiritual growth, and lower, where magic is used to solve everyday issues. This has always been, is, and will be. These are two sides of the same thing on different levels. For me, there is no contradiction. When I am developing myself, I study Kabbalah, delve into the Qliphoth tree to explore my inner workings and subconscious processes, and when I need noisy neighbors to stop making noise, I turn to folk magic and find a ritual to rid myself of these nuisances. Getting rid of neighbors' harassment can also be achieved through self-development, but this is a long process. So I see no contradiction. You can develop, for example, through gnosis or other paths, and you can simultaneously bury photos of your ex in the cemetery.

Magic, for me, is a way to grow spiritually. But sometimes, when you really need to find an affordable appartment, folk magic can be surprisingly efficient!

That is just the New Age type of thinking about spirituality, ethics etc. Some practices require you to be less attached to the material world but in general neither the spirit world or the human world runs on purity of intention or love and light alone. That is just silly.
