If you've been practicing the occult in it's various forms for at least a year, there surely must be things that you've learned along the way and wish you would have known when you first started. What is some occult or esoteric advice you would give to your past selves? I'll start:

Don't banish or cleanse after EVERY working. Sometimes those residual energies can be useful in other spells or rituals. Instead, if you do a working every day, cleanse weekly or bi-weekly. If you only do spells or rituals as necessary, you can cleanse or banish as necessary. The exception is baneful magic. Always cleanse after that.....and necromancy lol[i/]

  • Don't try too hard, let things happen naturally. Patience is key
  • Magic can't help you if you don't know how to help yourself
  • Be careful (and specific) of what you wish for
  • Practice willpower exercises

If I could, I would smack my younger self for (unknowingly) creating a soulbound talisman and gifting it to an untrustworthy person. I didn't really know what I was doing back then... sigh.

Try not to put undue emphasis on what I call 'the spooky factor' as in glitter flying out your wand or every invocation being like the first time you talk to King Paimon. Have faith in your workings without needing something supernatural slap you in the face in order to feel validated.

After my first evocation with Bune in the woods, i did full evocation, after the liecense to depart i directly went out of the circle lol which i shouldnt do. Now after an evocation and liesence to depart i go down on my knees in the circle and say prayers to God for protection and the blessings He has given.

-Flashy shit like psionics is only really as good as its practical applications.

-Don't expect to get good at something without consistent practice.

-The basics like meditation and focus are SO fucking important, do not neglect them. (This is honestly something I'm still paying for forgetting and it's a bitch.)

sigh I would tell my past self 1- don’t wait until you exhausted all your mundane options/efforts to do magic on the situation.
2- Don’t wait for things to go downhill to do magic. Expect the worse case scenario for any given situation then cast spells in order to prevent it before it happens. (If that makes sense if it doesn’t I can give examples to explain it better)

Let me add
3- learn and cast different kind of spells for different life situations as much as you can even if you don’t need it at the present moment , don’t just focus on the type of spells that applies to your current situation, because you never know what life is going to throw at you. so that in case of an emergency you are magically equipped and ready to deal with it

I bump this topic for as I feel that, now we have so many active forumaccounts, there can be added a lot. (which is nice for very beginners to read)
"In my early days, what I desired most was for the correct names to yield definitive, absolute results. My advice: never leave a ritual open; bring it to its conclusion even if you don’t see an immediate effect. Furthermore, shielding yourself and your work is non-negotiable—it keeps the interlopers away, and believe me, they are everywhere."

Advice to my past self? Honestly, none. Every step, every mistake, every burn was required to get me to where I am now, and I actually like where I am. I wouldn’t rob my past self of that.

I learn through experience. Not because advice is bad, but because the lessons don’t fully live in me until I’ve walked them. That’s just my path, experiential, messy, honest.

If anything, I’d simply stand beside that younger me and say: “You’re going to screw things up sometimes. It’s okay. Keep just going.”

Mistakes are not failures on this path, they shape the magician. They temper the steel. They make the good moments feel earned.

Not a Hallmark answer, I know, but it’s the truth.

-- Lighten up already! Seriously. Not every incantation will be your last, not every insight the end of your journey.
-- You have no idea what you are doing, let alone why. Keep doing it anyway. Perspective is built over a life-time.
-- The mountain you climb in life is yourself and you think you know what this means. Trust me on this. You don't, and that is a good thing because -- Wisdom without understanding is too heavy a burden to carry. It will come of itself in its own time. You will be none the wiser for it.
-- You will spend lifetimes looking for magick in all the wrong places. Keep looking. It will surprise you with sheer wonder.
-- The one you could not cloth, could not feed, could not shelter and could not love never once betrayed you.
-- Your wings were feet of clay.
-- Will you please stop writing letters to the O.T.O. admonishing them for having gone to seed? You are being silly!
-- You are loved. You are protected. You are watched over. You are forgiven, your humanity rectified. This is called grace.
-- Dance with the devils now and again.
-- Your day job matters. Show up for it. Your boss will hate you anyway.
-- Discipline, discipline, discipline. Sweat equity is where it's at. But...
-- All the magick you will ever learn you learned on the first day. The rest is memory and sorrow.
-- Never forget the secret sign of Saturn exalted. Use it often. Keep your ears to the wind.
-- The witch that yaps like a puppy says little and knows even less. Pay me no mind already.
