What they did wasn't new though. Religion has been used as a reason for war and conquest as early as Sumaria. Rome was the massive turning point for Chritendom though.

To get the picture it helps to re-imagine Alexandria as an ancient Mediterranean 1920's Parisian cafe culture. This was a super cosmopolitan and literate place. Everyone was hanging out and talking about traveling the Milky Way to get past the planetary "Fates" or haughty Star Demons.
It's like everyone was in the same room, raiding the Library of Alexandria, then running back to their ethnic barrios and rewriting the stories in their local myth vernacular. They can take pagan masks, but that does make them pagan. Whatever they are, they come from a time long long before all that late-stage myth.
