Im intrigued by the way that the Shams Al Marif has a numerology using the Arabic letters and the Kabbalah has similar powers for the Hebrew letters. The shams and Arabic approach uses magical squares in a more elaborated way. This made me wonder if the Kabbalahists also use/used magical squares and whether that is something the 2 traditions could learn from each other. The Arabic tradition doesn use permutation of letters as much as the Kabbalists (openly anyway). Any thoughts?

Yes, they're similar systems, and you also find forms in Latin & English in Agrippa's 3 books of occult philosophy, and Vedic forms in other sources. They're meant to make systems of connecting concepts together, and create "bodies" to house the unified intelligences, similar to how a modern chaos magician would make their sigils.
