When being with women and getting to know a friend I noticed that this saying doesn't apparently apply to them. Many magickians say that women really can screw up your magick if you get into a relationship at a magickally bad timing. I see this also as a function of male magick, but what about women magick?

How do you think it works for women?

"Gender is in everything; everything has its Masculine and Feminine Principles; Gender manifests on all planes."

There is a balance between masculine and feminine influences, and a lot of people who get magically 'messed up' from a relationship usually didn't properly control their magical influences/energy. In the nature of things, feminine influences are receptive, while masculine influences are expressive, the mix of both masculine and feminine influences leads to creation. In this case the practitioner getting into a relationship and not controlling their energies/influences will create new influences/energies that can cause disorder if not properly handled. These principles occur on all levels, but people getting into relationships often don't really consider outside the physical/emotional levels.

I’d like to reframe something here, because I think it matters. If a woman can “screw up” your magick, then maybe your magick, or your structure needed tweaking to begin with. Can you hold space for the feminine without performance? Without cracking? If not, then yeah, it’s a mirror. And yeah, that's hard as hell sometimes. Its a challenge, its something I have had to grow into rather than intellectualize. Each woman I encounter present different challenges for me (not to be read as a bad thing).

I agree with Anziel that gender is in everything. As men, we carry an inner feminine (anima), and if you’re not in touch with her at all, you’re more likely to trauma match than truly connect with a woman (Meaning seeking a woman to complete you, etc) That doesn’t make her the disruption. That just makes her the catalyst.

As for how this works for women? I’ll let those with lived experience speak to that.

Da hell? Never heard that. That's terrible. Be nice to your sweetie!! Love makes the world go round.

Seems like a mis-translation from trad magic practices.

In the grims there is a time of cleansing (which I rarely do fully) No meat, drugs, no knookie. The idea is to calm our emotions from the "passions" of the world to make you soul more transparent. The concept of "sin" as people think of it does not apply. Greek concepts and practice of clearing of miasma does.

In many animist spirit traditions there are taboos about no menstruating women , but that has more to do cleanliness and not gender. Avoid smelly foods like fish or garlic. The Egyptian sorcerer-priests circumcised themselves, and shaved off all their hair to avoid producing offensive odors. There is a legit line of practice that says human smells makes it less likely they will come. See Dr. Stephen Skinner for more.

You can also banish them with strong smells like burning asafoetida. Or farts. I'd like to see that. Exorcism by flatulence. :)

It's not all that difficult to imagine scenarios with genders reversed and insecure men messing up women's magick. In that sense it doesn't appear to be about genders and all about a magician being vulnerable while in a sensitive liminal state and mitigating disruptions.

I have never had a male presence negatively impact my magic. I mean I suppose if he went out of his way to be distracting or toxic he could make focusing on a ritual difficult but if he’s just nearby there is no issue. No male or trans male magic users in my life have ever complained of this. In fact most of them have said the opposite. They find when I’m around their spells are more successful, spirits are more likely to interact with them, and that they feel more connected to magic and spiritual energies. I find it very strange that a woman existing near a male messes up his magic. It seems more psychological in nature to me and that it comes from the expectation of it rather than from an outside source. But why not experiment with it and work on overcoming that issue. I feel like women get blamed for a lot as it is thanks to monotheistic religions and sexism, they don’t need to be considered male magic disrupters too… though that does sound fun.

All jokes aside there are way too many spells that require male and female magic energies coming together for that to be true. If women canceled out male magic then they would never be able to do group spell work or sex magic successfully. People can impact our magic but it’s not because of their sex or gender, but because of how they treat us, their individual energy, and how our own emotions/hormones act around them. If you get into a toxic relationship it very well could mess up your magic, but it’s because you are psychologically, emotionally, and physically stressed/drained, not their gender or sex.

There are folkloric accounts in Japan of flatulence repelling the yokai called Kappa and other dangerous yokai. Now to keep on topic, in ancient Japan the practice of Onmyōdō (The Way of Yin and Yang, which originates from the philosophy of yin-yang and the five elements.) were performed by specialists in magic and divination. Their court responsibilities ranged from tasks such as keeping track of the calendar, to mystical duties such as divination and protection of the capital from evil spirits. They could divine auspicious or harmful influences in the earth, and were instrumental in the moving of capitals. It is said that an onmyōji could also summon and control shikigami. As a whole they were predominantly male, however, women could be one and there are historical accounts of them having rituals that required the help of female Onmyōdō practitioners specifically to combine their Yin and Yang energies.

My own theory for women (only a theory) is that Malkuth is their highest sphere and Kether the lowest. So it's God Descending and Goddess Ascending. But not sure about it. Atleast Kundalini goes this way and it's a pure feminine force. What do you think?

I agree i also found this post strange.

in some eastern tantric traditions the male is seen as basically magickally inert or useless until he finds a priestess to initiate him, he gains his true power from the priestess.

You (or your friend) assume that the Hermetic principle of gender refers to male and female sex, when that is a complete falsehood or a total misunderstanding. All Hermetic principles, including the principle of gender, are an integral part of the individual, whether man or woman. The principles of the masculine and feminine exist in both men and women — in fact, there are masculine women and feminine men. We all have the principles of the cosmos integrated within us. This balance is represented by Adam Kadmon, the primordial androgynous being. We can also see the representation of the individual as the integration of all aspects — above and below, light and darkness, masculine and feminine — in Baphomet itself.
