Steganographia by Trithemius might be a very early example of this. I don't know why this writing doesn't get much attention. There's a couple ways of taking Stephanographia. I had written a huge post on it in a previous version of WF. Either Trithemius hid a lot of occult information in there, or he was literally making fun of people who believed in such things. It's hard to tell because last I looked a lot of it wasn't translated yet. Add to that the ciphers and such in the book haven't been completely figured out. This writing deserves a lot more attention.

This website is good and I've emailed back and forth with the author a couple times.

Yes, even in modern grimoires such as Gallery of Magic. Investigate the names and psalms and such very carefully.

Deliberate misinformation so that the unworthy do not understand. For example the wrong planets may be referenced so that the operation is likely to fail.

Alchemy is notorious for misleading attributions.

Consider also the karma accrued through the teaching of powerful techniques to humans infected by adverse spirits. Better to veil the teaching than have it misused by the unworthy

I think the biggest blind is the lack of encouragement to get primal with an ancient language, speaking it out loud, intoning and vibrating it.
I've gone through a lot of the aleph and Beth of Hebrew, and certain things do get attracted. Wind, Birds. (Aleph, air?) Beth still trying to figure out.
But how many of us try to chant a known alphabet in letter combinations, searching for effect?
I've not seen any encouragement for it. Yet this is the language with a magic system and power current behind it (i.e Babylonian, Sumerian, Chinese, Persian, Biblical Hebrew, Greek, Sanskrit, indigenous language alphabets etc).

What if the knocks were omitted entirely?

When you blindly follow a text without thinking about why or what you are saying or doing you create more insecurity in yourself.
Study a text or ritual and figure it out so that you can perform it (or rework it) with confidence.

I have seen two patterns of knocks/stamps used by Australian Aboriginals. One was for Earth elementals and the other was for Pleiadian spirits. Both patterns appear in Freemasonry. They work well when used with consciousness of their targets.

Without the knocks, achieving a similar result may require a more personal relationship with the targets
