Do you have to worship a deity to learn magic?

In our forum, the topics most discussed and studied are the worship of statues of deities and mediumship. Most of the communication revolves around one's inner sanctuary and personal talents. Participants often showcase their statues and share the detailed conversations they have with the deities to demonstrate their spiritual progress. I've seen people worshiping statues of Lucifer, Lilith, and Zeus. Is it necessary to worship statues when studying magical practices, and are there any practices that do not require worshiping statues?

There's no call for that. But if that is someone's style, then go for it.

You can do magick without invoking Entities at all. Entities just have a lot of power to them, so it's worthwhile.

Even then, I personally wouldn't worship them, but perhaps venerate - treat them with respect, like partners on a magickal journey.

No, it is not necessary.

Some schools of chaos magic are almost materialistic or at least atheistic in meaning that the gods are only in your head. But there are many practices that do not require any gods.

When you say worshiping statues, what do you mean by that? What reservations are you having? Journaling and diving deeper into this may help. Is it the appearance of idolatry? Or is it that you have an atheistic worldview?

Whatever the case may be, doing some introspection on this topic may be valuable to finding a path that will work for you!

That mistly depends on the path you choose. In general you can find paths that don't need gods to work well. In others there is a matter if good manner tonshow some aflictionnto god or gods but after all succes is thy proof. I got results with gids and without them but I like to be elastic and able to work under any circumstances. Worshipping can be fun as long as it does not produce neurosis.

It stems from but one branch of magick , originally 'evocation' / 'theurgy ' and is related to the 'love and devotion' sector and is the equivalent of Bakhti Yoga ( think of the Hare Krishna movement ) .

But there are many other paths of magick and yoga as well , it is far from the only path available .

I have yet to see anyone worshiping statue instead of worshiping a being that is represented by statue. Are you sure that you got those people right? Because this statement, that people worship statues, sounds like as if you had no idea what those people do and never asked them.

This. Deities optional. Be sure to check out their nuances before calling them up. Who knew Ganesha had a trickster aspect...

Good question. Maybe I would rephrase it as: "Can I do magic without relying on power from any other spiritual force?". My opinion is that you would be able to do very simple magic works without that help. Now, do we need to worship the deity/spiritual force in order to gain its favor? I would not go so far as to worship, you can call them and give them offerings without worshipping them. But you need to be honest and grateful.

It's basic personification.

Some petition a god form or other entities, others call up energy directly from the Earth and other elements. As long as you get a result, it's all good.

Depends on the kind of magic. Some spells (especially those activated by rituals), may require an actual god. And even then, not all gods require worship.

(this also opens the question: is offering a favourite food/drink worship or simply respect, the same you would offer to a friend who is helping you with a project? Is repayment worship? Is cooperation worship?)

Wha? No, no. I love daimons and materia magicae but none are absolutely required to do magic.

We can do it preferably well with just our imagination. Lynne McTaggart's Power of Eight demonstrates the amazing effects of focused group workings. Grim magicians and witches just like to include minds that don't have human bodies.

The current academic consensus indicates Western Magic comes to us originally from the Greco-Egyptian sorcerers (by way of Byzantium to Venice, London, New York, Houston, more, and all points south). If you read the PGM (Greek Magical Papyri), magicians tend to keep the deities on very tight leashes. That is totally valid approach reflected in many of the grimoires (the most extreme being the infamous Chain Curse in the Lesser Key, which is not a grim I use) , but it's not the only way.

In Vodou, the Lwa (who are not deities like most think of them) are not worshiped, but they are honored and venerated. Practitioners 'serve the spirits' so the spirits will serve them. It is a relationship of familial love. Vodou says "All sprits bow before God." so in "worshiping God" (fill in your own name for The Mystery) becomes another way to relating through a shared experience of beauty, kindess, compasssion, and chairty. It's a way to structure social interaction with other humans and The Invisibles, not about the worship per se.

(Again, not preaching here. Fill in with your own value system as you wish. Just know you will meet others, with and without bodies, who share those values, and you will all embody them more and more over time, as you focus on and celebrate them.)

I think the question really is "do I have to work with a Deity to make magic?" And you don't. I don't know how far you go in some styles of magic if you don't, but is not mandatory.

You don't have to worship any deities, demons, angels or other entities for the sake of―well, whatever you have in mind; be it simple practice, self-development, spells, curses, healing e.g. Yes, you still should respect them, stay genuine and approach with clear intent, but worship is not something you must aim for.

An unpopular note I rarely see mentioned; most entities prefer not to be worshipped, at all.
Most worshipp is shallow and 'dry', they empty of any potency.

The benefit of a decent 'work connection' (or just bonding in general) with mutual respect and offering is not less than what a droid like worship with no genuine affection and dedication towards the entity itself could offer. In fact, it is often far less. The quality of your time, emotions, thoughts, energy and offerings towards them is real, and if you do 'worship' an entity for the results, you worship the results, and not the entity. Deities don't need this kind of approach, you won't fool them, and no one should fool themselves either.

The question is, do you want deities, demons, angels etc. by your side while you walk on the path of magic and if so, why? For you don't need entities to do that, at all. It can help, and it has multiple benefits, but nothing is impossible without them, either.

In fact, while I have almost two decades of practice with magic, the deitites, demons and entities around me are here for bonding (they called for me, I accepted), rather than pulling out 'anything fancy', and I spend most of my times with them; there's always someone (if not more) around me for decades, and I did not have them here for work at the first place, but because I love them. I did my magic 95% of my time without seeking for any help or suggestion from them.
Their presence, the process of bonding and the benefit coming from it helped me to improve without aiming for the result directly, and the pure genuinity is empowering this process, but, again, it is not necessary.

If you personally feel like that worshipping in a more formal manner would help your mind focus on the task, and allow you to slip into the right mindset and psychic stance, then go for it. It'll be profitable for your magic, mostly.

Just remember:
Just be honest.
Be clear.
Be willing to do the work.
and always show respect.
