[Opinion] Jar Spell Basics >< How do you make yours?

Just wonderings if you guys do them and if so what your various techniques for constructing them. In African American Hoodoo at least in the US and in Appalachian Folk Practices they are perhaps most well known examples. Other do exist outside them in other cultures and methods can vary wildly.

Across much of the classical world various cultures across the Mediterranean, Europe, and the Middle-East using ceramic vases was very common to do more or less the similar things. Only the ingredients or spirits invoked in their creation differed.

In the Middle-East in Arabian Tradition there's the famous Genie in a Bottle or Lamp. The Lamp in question was a ceramic lamp originally long before it was changed in stories to the more elaborate brass or gold. Even that idea though is not unique to the Arab world and is found in Europe commonly known as "spirit bottles" where the premises is essentially the same.

Regardless I'm curious about your guys thoughts and or general techniques when you decide to construct a jar spell. No judgements here so please feel free to share!

Austin Osman Spare had some techniques he claimed were effective. He likewise claimed these were based on ancient Greek practices. Personally, I find them distasteful. The jar functions, literally, as a ritualized wank bank. Like so much of Spare, one has to be there. And I am not there yet. Nor care I to come.

I myself have only once made a "real" honey jar. This was not for love but to get my landlord at the time to stop being such a hateful dick. The recipe included Agnus Castus - I was unsure about that because I had to order it specifically. In a divination I asked about that (tarot "what if I do what if I don't") and the answer was that if I didn't include it it would be a romantic version. So I ordered it and made a little honeyjar. Worked really good: landlord become a softie (although I later heard he had developed cancer and was in treatment - may have also influenced his temper).

In more recent times I made a little jar spell with oil instead of honey. When I wanted to get rid of it later on I could pour it out and burn it.

Now I'm kinda curious what he did exactly. Jar or Amphora/Oil Lamp type vessels did exist in ancient greece since glass was reserved for only the most wealthy and most common folk would not be using them for this type of stuff like we do today. They would 9/10 more than likely be using that or stone vs glass.

I recall reading about some sympathetic rituals involving clay or terracotta vessel when researching Zeus and the cults surrounding him. Basically the gist was very similar to a modern day hoodoo style honey jar but instead of invoking the Christian God you invoked Zeus. Instead of just honey a sweet baked dessert is used in edition to honey. The idea is something like the jar would appeal to his better nature, sweeten him towards you, with the end goal being financial prosperity.

In Dan Harms book it talks about other variations of ceramic vessel spells mostly involving cursing existing and I recall vaguely reading some spells in the PGM that sounded very similar to what we would recognize as jar spells today. Every variation under the sun existed I'm sure, but these practices being hidden, were probably and will probably remain undocumented since they were secretive by nature. It's funny in his interview he wanted people who knew about these practices to come out publicly to provide more context. All I could think was "lol good luck with that Dan! ".

Thanks I'll have to look into those old posts later. I done honey jars myself a few times on old lovers and once a hardass supervisor. In the case of the lovers they were... more sweet towards me.. however I learned something very interesting about some people by doing them. Which is that some personalities even if softened, are just not very warm or fuzzy by nature even when in love, strong and silent should really be called "stone and silent".

The supervisor just became very buddy buddy with me, which worked out great for me, as he threw favors my way. However it was a bit much as sometimes he shared a little too much (learned about a couple extra-marital affairs he may have been having). None of my business though so I was polite and just continued doing my job.

I do not recall, really. He does not seem to have been too specific. If memory serves it involved obtaining wishes, not works of destruction. Unfortunately, Spare turns English into a dead language and no Rosetta Stone, so little of what he writes remains quotable after reading.

I could and probably will lol. It's just I kinda started this thread not just to learn but to hear directly from other folks what they do straight from the source. Still learning the old fashioned way though no worries.

Yes I know. After reading about it I have used the technique once but used a very small wooden box that I buried instead. It's not what I'd call a jar spell though and I only gave the title and a source because it was brought up a couple of times in this thread now.

In my opinion, contemporary spell jars success depends only on the talent of his creator.

I see a spell jar as a way to represent the goal, what is going to be in it are purely symbolic associations to my goal. I

The jar itself and the things I place into it don't hold any power, but they act as a focused way to feed the thoughtform of my magick.

If i need a jar to attract a particular lover. I am going to collect things that represent that lover.

Example : I need to attract a guy that reminds me of Timothée Chalamet. I am going to meditate on how my goal feel like in my mind and use things that support it.

In my mind, this relationship feels very floral, with both masculine and feminine vibes. Timothée is also a very easy going guy, so i would choose things that TO ME represent all those idea.

I might choose lavender to represent the love itself and the feminine part, maybe cocoa for the masculine side. Timothée reminds of The Fool of the Tarot so i might add that. Once the jar is made, i might hug it and kiss it, to feed the thoughtform with my desire.

As i store the jar, i will keep it mind my thoughtform is here, working to create my reality.

Once a week, i might take the jar and focusing on my intent. I could also choose to do it everyday. I will just keep it in mind that the guy is somewhere, searching for me.

That's more or less how I was taught to do it myself. With the edition charging it somehow via a candle, resting on the altar, visualizing the goal, praying, chanting a spell to activate it. It's all very intuitive as you just outlined with their being no one way. Love spell jars being particularly popular lol. I'm a bit burn out on love magick myself but it's always fun to hear about other peoples love spells.

I'm curious what do you think of adding symbols painted or drawn on the outside of the jar related to purpose of the spell? It's an idea I've had for awhile that I wanted to try and have been toying around with. In my old coven their was trad witch from the south of france who use to post the jar spells she made towards various purposes. They always looked so beautiful and intricate it made want to try it myself. Granted I'm no artist and have some serious reservation about my own abilities but I'd still like to try.

I think it's both a way to remember of the intent and the magick nature of the object, no less no more. It's kinda a trigger for us, i don't believe it hold any real power to itself (like anything else ahahha.... Mostly in a jar form.
