I am not sure if this is the right place to open the topic but here we go. I heard many times in my country when old people say: "Before going to sleep, don't leave glass of water near your bed bcs ghosts will come and you will have bad dreams. I usually don't believe in this, but sometimes it happened that I had nightmares after I left glass of water there.

Is there any truth in all of this?

glass of water near your bed
The glass of water is the common offering to ancestors, so if you haven't reached out to them it could be that instead of your grandparents some thirsty strangers come to visit (or it's just because the thought was planted in your head as Oberon said)
There are some tutorial posts about ancestral veneration on here.

You believe it so it happens. 😊

I don't believe in it, but it happened anyway. This is the reason why I am asking. I keep doing that and sometimes it happens, sometimes it does not. I heard about water offering in the past, this is the only reason I am sus about it.

I don't usually leave water by my bedside (if I'm thirsty, I'll drink from the bathroom tap) but I'm on holiday in Portugal at the moment, and I put a bottle of water out last night. At some point, my partner was really thirsty - it was dark - and she reached over me for my bottle whilst I was asleep. The lid wasn't screwed on properly and she managed to tip most of it over me. I can't remember if I was dreaming or not, but it scared the crap out of me.

And then I had to sleep on the bloody sofa because the mattress was saturated. No ghosts, but I was in a right bloody mood for the rest of the night!

Love it, the whole event.

I drink a lot of tea and as it happens, I leave a cup by the bed (on the table) with any possible level of being filled with tea... and occasionally the cup is empty. I sleep pretty well, actually.

I've never had a problem with it. Banish before sleep- most banishing rituals establish astral perimeter as a part of banishing. Or maybe make a protection talisman, maybe even one that specializes in protecting you during sleep, such as fifth pentacle of the moon from the Key of Solomon.

I got my bedside glass of water 'thrown' in my face to wake me up ! Boy was I angry ... who the hell came in without knocking and decided to wake up like that ? I jumped out of bed ready to ...... Ohhhhhhh ! Thats right , I remembered .

They had been a rat about so I ( as I sometimes do ) caught a big diamond python and locked it inside overnight . WEll, it had caught and eaten the rat , but I slept in and had not let it out , I suppose it was ciold and wanted some sun .... somehow it knocked the glass of water over and into my face ... it was on the table still staring at me ; '' W ell ! Now you are awake, open the door ! '' :D

So, you never know ... it could attract anything !

Water—The Basic Remedy

The first effort in prevention of influence while asleep is to provide a vessel for the reception of energy from the influence. This can be accomplished by adopting a nightly ritual known as sleeping with water. This ritual is so basic that many have done it from childhood without having any conscious knowledge of why it is done.

Immediately before retiring for the night, fill a glass with water and place it at the head of your bed, so that it will be beside you when you sleep. This glass of water is not drinking water—it is there to catch all the energy you don't want around you. This glass should never be used for drinking water.

In the morning, empty the water in the toilet and rinse out the glass three times, pouring the water used to rinse it into the toilet as well. When you flush it down, you are flushing away what was in the glass.

Repeat this ritual every night, and you will find that much of the difficulty attaining good sleep disappears. If you feel that your sleep is still troubled at times, you might add a few bits of camphor to the water every night. A piece as large as a wooden match-head will do as well as any larger amount. More doesn't necessarily work better.

The energy released by the dispersion of the camphor will assist in the dissipation of any thought forms. It really makes no difference which hand you use to draw the water to fill your glass every night, but in the morning you should take the glass in your anti-dexter hand. (This is opposite to the hand you write with. If you are right-handed, your anti-dexter hand is your left.) By using this hand and following this procedure, you are stressing the symbolism of refusing to take back that which the water has collected during the night.

Water can be a conduit for spirits of the dead, who can cause distress while sleeping. I seem to remember something to the effect of lots of "Sprite bubbles" in a large glass of water on an ancestral altar/boveda is indicative of high levels of spirits within the area. Someone else with more knowledge in SA folk magic might be able to confirm or deny this, perhaps.

I think the key is your intention in placing that glass of water. If you hope to use it to ward off ghosts or negative forces, then you can place it—but don’t drink from it. If you believe what your elders say, then don’t place the glass at all.
