With the winter upcoming here one of my favorites, it is a strange and strong combination, but it works. Here we go:

  • 700 ml red wine
  • 300 ml crème de Mûre (blackberry liqueur)
  • 200 grams granulated sugar
  • 50 ml water
  • 200 ml freshly brewed strong coffee
  • 1 orange peel
  • 1 pipe cinnamon
  • 2 cloves
  • (some nutmeg to taste, optional)

Take a big pot and dissolve the sugar in the water and coffee while heating. When dissolved, add the orange peel, the cinnamon and the cloves.

Add the wine. Put on low-medium heat and let it simmer for 15 minutes. Add the blackberry liquor and serve immediately.

Wow that sounds amazing. Which part of Europe are you from? My wife lived in Germany for a few years, so we make glühwein the way she had it there.

I am from the border area of the Netherlands and Belgium, known as the Noorden-Kempen, Dutch for the Northern part of the Kempen. Glühwein is great. It is like our Dutch Bisschopswijn.

I made blackberry wine this year also and that is a great wine for muled too!
