Hi everyone,
the idea for this thread was spinning in my head for quite a time now and I finally would like to give it go! A thread dealing with music which was clearly inspired by magic, mysticism, spirituality and everything being part of „occulture“, or the other way around, inspiring people to get into touch with those things, or even using it for the purpose of using their own great work!
I would like to encourage others to share their favorite occult music, and their thoughts and perspectives on music used for magical practice.
To lead by example...
Music in general is a very important part of my life, I'm an avid (or rather obsessive-compulsive) music collector, and from an early age on I had the wish to make music myself and later on I actually did, in several (semi-successful) projects.
I was always (very unconsciously at the beginning) drawn to music inspired by the occult. Music usually not considered „mainstream“, especially rock and metal bands, your very typical „Devil's music“, at least in the eyes of some Christian fundamentalists
This music sparked my interest to get more into the topic, historically and philosophically, and over the years I did more and more, to the point where I got seriously involved and started studying and practicing myself.
Basically, music was my pathway to magic, and still it is a very important part of it, as a ritualistic tool and as a way to express my very own ideas on magic and mysticism, and the experiences I made in my practice.
Today I would like to share a record that had quite an impact on me and still has, musically and magically. „Sacrifice“, first released in 1970 by the British progressive rock band Black Widow, one of the first music groups ever who dealt in their lyrics with themes of magic and the occult. Regarding their lyrics, they've must been studying the topic quite seriously, and they performed rituals at the beginning of every live show, one time live on German public broadcast, in the very popular tv-show „Beat Club“!!! See here:
Here you find the studio record:
„Sacrifice“ is a concept album telling the story of a quite „Faustian“ or „black“ magician, if you want, who attempts and succeeds in gaining „all earthly power“ by studying „the secrets arts“ which „had stand the ravages of time“. At the end (spoiler alert!) he must pay the price for his yearning, with his „soul condemned in hell“.
The album consists of seven tracks, seven parts of the story. Seven, a magic number!
In Adonai and Babylon, Etruscans and Egyptians came to my temple, journeyed to the valley of the Moon.
The opening track „In Ancient Days“ is a flashback to Antiquity, to a past life of the seeker, when he already was a very powerful and (in)famous sorcerer. In this memory lies the seed of his now growing ambition to get involved with the occult.
Have you ever read the books that I wrote centuries ago? The Clavicule of Solomon is nothing by their side!
The second track starts with a bold claim, made by the ancient sorcerer himself, now speaking directly to the seeker, encouraging him to collect and study his writings, so he can find the ultimate „Way To Power“.
Help me in my search for knowledge, I must learn the secret art!
„Come To The Sabbat“, the following track must have been quite a shocker to audience back then. Musically, the most ritualistic piece on the record, with its haunting repetitive chorus and provocative content. The seeker performs an old fashioned hexen sabbath, to summon the devil himself.
The time has come, the power is raised, the wind brings voices to my ears!
„Conjuration“, a chilling number, concludes his search. The seeker is now in a „sacred place“ maybe a forgotten ancient temple? To gain the power he yearns he must renew the ancient pact once made with the goddess Astaroth. He is anxious, close to the point of no return, the holy communion!
You asked me to come to you, prayed to have me here. Here I am in human form, take away my fear!
In „Seduction“, the first and very literal climax of the album, now Astaroth herself appears in front of the seeker and addresses him directly. She seems to be frightened, but curious about the mortal who has entered her very sanctum. She agrees to the unification. But there is slight hint of doubt, or even danger! „I will move and you will fall“, what does that mean? Who is actually the seducer in this story, and who is the seduced?
And in my dream my dear, beloved mother came to me. She begged me to turn my face, once more, up high towards the Lord!
„Attack of the Demon“ is the conclusion to seeker's journey. He has truly become a very powerful sorcerer, but for a prize! The story here follows the „Faustian“ theme, about a mortal who sold his soul in exchange for magic powers. To me, a weak point in the concept's narrative, simplifying the ideas of „black“ and „white magic“, taken from a very monotheistic perspective.
A sacrifice, a sacrifice, you say you want a sacrifice. You say the words too easily to know just what you mean!
The last song and musical climax of the album is a heed of warning to the audience, to willing practitioners of the occult, probably from the seeker himself, whose fate we have just witnessed. And I have to say, it comes with a cool twist! It does not condemn the practice of magic but it makes clear it's a very serious matter, with possibly consequences, the law of „Sacrifice“!
I hope you enjoyed my presentation, the rambling of an obsessed music fan. I would like to hear about others musical inspiration, as a gateway to magic, as a ritual tool or just about music that is inspired by the occult!
And I hope the administration is d'accord with my choice of format and sub-forum!
