Hi everyone,

the idea for this thread was spinning in my head for quite a time now and I finally would like to give it go! A thread dealing with music which was clearly inspired by magic, mysticism, spirituality and everything being part of „occulture“, or the other way around, inspiring people to get into touch with those things, or even using it for the purpose of using their own great work!

I would like to encourage others to share their favorite occult music, and their thoughts and perspectives on music used for magical practice.

To lead by example...

Music in general is a very important part of my life, I'm an avid (or rather obsessive-compulsive) music collector, and from an early age on I had the wish to make music myself and later on I actually did, in several (semi-successful) projects.
I was always (very unconsciously at the beginning) drawn to music inspired by the occult. Music usually not considered „mainstream“, especially rock and metal bands, your very typical „Devil's music“, at least in the eyes of some Christian fundamentalists ;) This music sparked my interest to get more into the topic, historically and philosophically, and over the years I did more and more, to the point where I got seriously involved and started studying and practicing myself.

Basically, music was my pathway to magic, and still it is a very important part of it, as a ritualistic tool and as a way to express my very own ideas on magic and mysticism, and the experiences I made in my practice.

Today I would like to share a record that had quite an impact on me and still has, musically and magically. „Sacrifice“, first released in 1970 by the British progressive rock band Black Widow, one of the first music groups ever who dealt in their lyrics with themes of magic and the occult. Regarding their lyrics, they've must been studying the topic quite seriously, and they performed rituals at the beginning of every live show, one time live on German public broadcast, in the very popular tv-show „Beat Club“!!! See here:

„Sacrifice“ is a concept album telling the story of a quite „Faustian“ or „black“ magician, if you want, who attempts and succeeds in gaining „all earthly power“ by studying „the secrets arts“ which „had stand the ravages of time“. At the end (spoiler alert!) he must pay the price for his yearning, with his „soul condemned in hell“.
The album consists of seven tracks, seven parts of the story. Seven, a magic number!

In Adonai and Babylon, Etruscans and Egyptians came to my temple, journeyed to the valley of the Moon.

The opening track „In Ancient Days“ is a flashback to Antiquity, to a past life of the seeker, when he already was a very powerful and (in)famous sorcerer. In this memory lies the seed of his now growing ambition to get involved with the occult.

Have you ever read the books that I wrote centuries ago? The Clavicule of Solomon is nothing by their side!

The second track starts with a bold claim, made by the ancient sorcerer himself, now speaking directly to the seeker, encouraging him to collect and study his writings, so he can find the ultimate „Way To Power“.

Help me in my search for knowledge, I must learn the secret art!

„Come To The Sabbat“, the following track must have been quite a shocker to audience back then. Musically, the most ritualistic piece on the record, with its haunting repetitive chorus and provocative content. The seeker performs an old fashioned hexen sabbath, to summon the devil himself.

The time has come, the power is raised, the wind brings voices to my ears!

„Conjuration“, a chilling number, concludes his search. The seeker is now in a „sacred place“ maybe a forgotten ancient temple? To gain the power he yearns he must renew the ancient pact once made with the goddess Astaroth. He is anxious, close to the point of no return, the holy communion!

You asked me to come to you, prayed to have me here. Here I am in human form, take away my fear!

In „Seduction“, the first and very literal climax of the album, now Astaroth herself appears in front of the seeker and addresses him directly. She seems to be frightened, but curious about the mortal who has entered her very sanctum. She agrees to the unification. But there is slight hint of doubt, or even danger! „I will move and you will fall“, what does that mean? Who is actually the seducer in this story, and who is the seduced?

And in my dream my dear, beloved mother came to me. She begged me to turn my face, once more, up high towards the Lord!

„Attack of the Demon“ is the conclusion to seeker's journey. He has truly become a very powerful sorcerer, but for a prize! The story here follows the „Faustian“ theme, about a mortal who sold his soul in exchange for magic powers. To me, a weak point in the concept's narrative, simplifying the ideas of „black“ and „white magic“, taken from a very monotheistic perspective.

A sacrifice, a sacrifice, you say you want a sacrifice. You say the words too easily to know just what you mean!

The last song and musical climax of the album is a heed of warning to the audience, to willing practitioners of the occult, probably from the seeker himself, whose fate we have just witnessed. And I have to say, it comes with a cool twist! It does not condemn the practice of magic but it makes clear it's a very serious matter, with possibly consequences, the law of „Sacrifice“!

I hope you enjoyed my presentation, the rambling of an obsessed music fan. I would like to hear about others musical inspiration, as a gateway to magic, as a ritual tool or just about music that is inspired by the occult!

And I hope the administration is d'accord with my choice of format and sub-forum!

First of all, wonderful topic.🤩🤩🤩 I certainly enjoyed your presentation!

Here is something I wanted to present. Although I am not in the Norse traditions or Asatru, this one is worth it because I still see something in the idea of an Axis Mundi and Yggdrasil functions as an Axis Mundi binding levels of existence. It is a song about Ygdrassil and is comparable with what I saw in my Astral travels. If I sing it, take over the exact Rhythm and connect it with some visions I have, I can feel the building up of energy from my center till my crown. If I start with soft voice and build up louder and louder and the tension in a very controlled way, there comes a moment where I have to release that. That's the magic moment.

I love music and ocultism, one of my favorites is the Masonic music of Mozart, more recent music I would sugest Heavy Metals classic Dio or Rainbow, I think I started getting interested in occultism thanks to Scandinavian Black Metal scene or a Brittish classic Cradle of Filth, also more resently I discovered Dark Neo Folk from Germanic countries and this Australian band called Tarot which is Psychedelic Rock with heavy Occult lyrics.

Satie and particularly Scriabin had some influence going on in their work. As far as bands, Psychic TV & Fields of the Nephilim come to mind.

Thank you, happy to hear!!!

I think "vision" is a very important aspect of music! Music which I consider as "good" music gives me an immediate vision, bad music won't. This vision connected to a piece of music can develop over time, but still remains in various ways.

I agree! Very similiar for me. I believe that Ronnie J. Dio was some kind of white magician or a mystic himself! :D He offers a great philosophy in his lyrics. Actually, in my last morning invocation ritual I included a snippet from"Heaven and Hell" in my chant: The world is full of kings and queens, they blind your eyes and steal your dreams!

Mozart is an interesting take. I'm aware of his Masonic roots, but I need to delve deeper in this topic!

Very cool thread, Van Horne!
Thank you so much! I'm glad to come back to the forum to find so many reactions to it!

Led Zeppelin and Yes are a good examples. There was always something unearthly and mystic about their music. Jimmy Page is a big admirer of Aleister Crowley, even bought his mansion back then! Jon Anderson is basically Space Jesus  and "Close to the Edge" is not from this world!!!

The band Tool has heavy occult influence. Examples -

  • “Forty Six & 2” → Jung’s Shadow and human evolution
  • “Lateralus” → Fibonacci sequence + spiritual expansion
  • “Parabola” → Body as a temporary vessel for consciousness

Good Doom Metal with occult lyrics.

Here is some Black Metal with an occult focus
To me, Doom and Black Metal was very definitely gateway music to the Occult. Electric Wizard, The Devil's Blood .... and especially Morbid Angel, listening the first time to "Altars of Madness" I was like "ok now I want to become an evil black magic wizard myself and do weird shit in black robes and stuff" :ROFLMAO:

That's interesting! I was never big into Tool myself, but I do respect their work of art!

And yes, synthesizers and the electrification of music in general, was a game changer! Basically a new cultural peak of Human civilization!!!

I actually lost interest in a lot of Heavy Metal after I got myself into Occultism, for example Black Metal I dont listen a lot of it anymore, but as I said I discovered this gems below called Dark Neo Folk, this band is from Iceland if I am not mistaken and I have quite few nice tracks I would love to upload if any one is interested.

¨Originally a solo project by singer and multi-instrumentalist Will Hunter, Vévaki is a folk band which draws from Nordic heathenism and animistic traditions. Myth, ritual and a connection with the natural world inform Vévaki’s music, which is both contemporary in sound and wide-ranging in instrumentation.¨

The soundtrack to The Dunwich Horror I posted was composed and arranged by Les Baxter. Some occult music necessarily comes from the soundtracks of good/great and sometimes just passable occult movies.

Regarding Metal my listening habits changed from quantity to quality. I got more picky and now I tend to listen to artists who have to tell a tale or share a vision, not just playing the music for sake of playing, if that makes any sense!?

I also got more into different genres. Neo Folk definitely offers some great stuff. Searching music I can use for practice I started to get into Dark Ambient/Ritual.

Here one of my favorites

I was thinking about this. There are so many songs that may not seem occult, or ritualistic by lyrical content, but songs like Return to Serenity by Testament, that song is a ritual. The sonic impression is an opening inward, no resolution. Leaves you haunted. Very ritualistic to me. An invitation inward to do the work.

The album Blood Incantation by Timewave Zero is ritualistic as hell. No lyrics. Dark, moody, ambient.

I could go on and on. So much music is the ritual, it is the magick. It cracks something open, whether the artist intended it that way or not. To me music is magick. Songs that you would never consider as well, take the BeeGees Stayin Alive. You just arent human if that song doesn't put a pep in your step, it gets into your brain deep. Music is powerful magick.

Sorry if that was off topic, I kept it light.

It seemed gratuitous to post in yet another music thread, but decided to recognize the following artist here. IMO the most insightful, legit and inspiring occult musician of the 21st century so far.

About 15 years ago there was a forum with a very active general music thread to participate in. About 20 pages a day with around 500 songs from about 30ish posters(a dozen-ish regulars). A lot of reposts, familiar tunes, but with so much content being shared there were many, many gems to discover. I'd always listen to unfamiliar posts.
Quite a few occult ones. Not all found from posts. I'd clear my youtube cookies every few days and listen to specific genres to populate the sidebar to find new tunes.

It was from the sidebar that I discovered in 2011 the artist Aleah Stanbridge through remixes of the demo of her song Vapour.
The deep, gentle approach and rawness of her lyrics immediately conveyed Experience through the dialogue.

Silent Kisses on my neck
Through the Veils You have come
Burning up my last defence
As We Merge into One
In the Fire of Your Eyes
Shining Vapour I Become
Hold me closer as I Rise
We Dissolve into One

I Hear your Voice - I hear You Call me
Through the Ether - Through my storm
There is nothing left to hold me
As I fall - Into my Soul

There were only demos of a few other songs of her's available at the time, a few unauthorized techno remixes. All of them with the same spiritual vector. With titles like My Will and the lyrics her message was strong and clear

Seek out my Heart
Seek out my Soul
Find my Truth
For You Know
Who I Am
And where I am headed
My Goal
Is Your Goal
Ultimately

It seemed there was so much momentum to her demo music for her to launch from, but she all but disappeared. Not that I was following too closely, but I was searching every couple of months to see if there was a new solo release.

Then in 2016 many of us who admired her work found out about her illness and death.

Her demos were collected, remastered and reworked by other artists during her illness, and posthumously .
She even wrote a song called Inverted Enlightenment for the album during that time that was even more startlingly personal.

Rain over these inner planes
Radio silence again
I’ve been here before
I recognize the same entrance way
To my watery grave

It's in the video collection of songs from the posthumous album.

Outside her solo demos she was in a band called Trees of Eternity. The lyrics have the same insight.
The video for Broken Mirror funerary.
A piece of me in your eyes
Reminds me of what's forgotten
I need to get closer to the fire
And feel my own reflection

A piece of me needs to die

That the story of her music is so wound up in the story of her life is part of the beautiful wonder of it. That her physical death ended with the impression of a grace of immortality to the living.
