Do you think there are magical systems that can affect your mental and physical health for the worse? If so, why and how? If not, why not?

I did a Tarot reading on whether I should practice a certain system. The results were almost ideal for finance, romance, and spiritual growth, but when it came to health effects the predictions were dire:

Q: How will this path affect my physical health?
A: The Tower - danger, conflict, unforeseen catastrophe, ambitions

Q: How will this path affect my mental health?
A: The Devil - bondage, materiality, necessity, force, fate

What do you think? Should I move forward but just work hard on taking care of myself?

Several years ago I asked my mentor for a set curriculum of magical study. He thought for a few minutes and then recommended one saying, ”this one is safe”. At the time I thought it was an odd comment. When I began the lessons I found the repeated caution “These lessons are perfectly safe as long as you do them exactly as instructed“. Now, after 2 1/2 years of study, I understand that warning.

Everything begins as thought. Anything with the power to affect thought is dangerous. When I first started my curriculum I thought it was unnecessarily slow, but I persisted at the recommended pace. Now I am glad that I did.

It's entirely up to you, but since you are asking; ABSOLUTELY F#%&ING NOT.

If your physical and mental health both go, the money, love, revenge, or whatever else you get will mean very little. I'd suggest divineing in more detail on what, if anything, can be done to mitigate the health risks, why these risks are there in the first place, and holding off until you find solid solutions.

Yes, all of them. A possible exception would be the Candali I practice, which seems to actually be designed to be safe for beginners to work through in a step by step manner. I can't imagine why all magick systems aren't designed like this, but they aren't.

I mean, good health is not everything and there are things for which it should be sacrificed without a second thought, but it generally comes before the other things you've listed. You can enjoy good health while poor, alone and not well-read, but there's little use in riches, love or arcane lore if you're diseased or insane.

May I ask what kind of a path it is?

That's a good point, actually.

Oh c'mon Mannie, tell me what you really think! ;)

Seriously though, I appreciate your candor. It snapped me out of the 'Well, maybe it will be okay somehow' la-la land that the rest of the reading had lulled me into. I need that burst of clarity. (y)

Yeah, that's right. Medical bill would drain the money, and its hard to be passionate if you're sick and crazy.

That's a good suggestion too, but I'm going to put in hold for about a week. I'm at one of those crossroads moments where I have different systems calling me, so I'm using Tarot to pick the most promising one.

Like what?

Yep, good points.

It's jinn magic, via Mosheh Ely's book Jinn Magick. We have a thread discussing it HERE.

I like the book a lot and was looking forward to practicing it. I already got the materials together, assembled the altar, and started doing the preliminary meditations. But then NAP called me away a few weeks ago with a dream, and then hearing 'NAP', 'NAP', 'NAP', 'NAP', 'NAP', 'NAP', 'NAP' all night in my head. I'm starting wonder if Arzel pulled my nuts out of the fire.

Also, I did a reading for another system last night. It was downright flabbergasting, and on the surface, rather comical. o_O:ROFLMAO: I will definitely post it later, either in another thread or maybe I'll start a journal.

It would help to know what systems you are looking at. In general, I personally have had positive health benefits from my practices, but I have also seen people have negative effects. It usually results from an imbalance that is being overlooked. I always recommend a good clearing routine (burn bowls, conscious showers, etc) and to find a good somatic therapist and/or spend time grounding yourself in nature. If you are taking the time to sit with yourself and processing what comes up from your subconscious, you are probably going to be fine. If you ignore it and try to push your emotions back down, its going to eventually manifest in the physical body. Be gentle and kind to yourself and pay attention to how you feel both mentally and emotionally. Find a short practice you can do every day at the same time no matter what. I use the kabbalistic cross, but it can also be 3 deep breaths with full awareness of each breath and how it feels. Build off of that and when you need to "rest" you have a baseline so it continues to move you forward in your practice no matter what.

I think that if a person learns to pay close enough attention they can discover that everything - yes everything - has an effect on their mental and physical well being. One possible definition of magic is: The ability to effect change in ways that are too subtle for others to detect or understand”.
