I'm schizophrenic. For me, it meant that I had to walk a different path than even my fellow magicians. It was scary at first but over time reading about different occult systems and philosophies, and then mustering the courage to attempt to make contact with "spirits", I got used to it. Now it's at the point where if I start talking about my practice it just pisses people off because I'm not following the rules they think are real and have to be followed. So even amongst other occultists I'm treated like an outcast and told I'm delusional or misleading people.
Frankly, you get used to it. My advice is, trust yourself, even when you might be wrong, even when people call you crazy, and even when it might lead to trouble. I will never submit myself to the thoughts of others and just repress my own mind. I think my own thoughts and speak my own mind as much as possible, and I readily accept the consequences. It's beyond morals and ethics. It's just cause and effect, making choices based on expected outcomes and lived experience. I couldn't care less if people think I'm psychotic or delusional. I care when they use that as an excuse to put the cuffs on me or take away my rights and priviledges. People's opinions are just, whatever, as long as its just talk. All their opinions tell me is how they feel about it and what kind of conversations I can expect to have with them. It just sets the boundary conditions of whatever we are discussing. Which is fine, I appreciate knowing what people can or cannot take seriously.
"Traditionalists" for example, who show signs of self-importance in their elitism about the purity of their practice and it's "authenticity" and effectiveness, tend to not get along with me and tell me I'm psychotic or stupid or any number of other labels that are always pejorative, simply because the research and experimentation I've done goes outside the limits of their chosen framework. So I generally avoid having conversations with such types of people. It gets messy almost immediately, suddenly I'm on trial, and I almost always feel extremely drained by the exchange.
It is 100% your own discernment in my opinion. What you bring with you, in the deepest parts of yourself, is the interface through which your experiences will manifest, through which spirits will try to contact you, and through which you can contact them. If you "normal" and kind of an narcissistic asshole, that's going to get you into far more trouble than if you're neurodivergent but also have some humility and emotional awareness.
