My answer to the opening question is that this person is human. I don't think it makes sense to heap insult or judgement, regardless of how (un)fruitful or (un)meaningful we consider the described occult struggle to be.
I mostly agree with the criticisms of Bardon and his writings, to me it reads more as posturing and gatekeeping than an actual path to magical or personal betterment... I've been around "teachers" who held quite similar views, and it typically turned out they were more interested in their own status and image than in actually helping others grow.
20 years doesn't just "go by" eventlessly. Those years were spent with being a human, living, doing life stuff, experiencing, etc. Regardless whether one just kept banging at a painted door, or kinda forgot about it halfway through and just kept on living, I wouldn't dare say any of it was in vain. Still, looking toward the future, I would recommend paths that are more well trodden, as opposed to being a giant monolith left in the waste with a door painted on it.
