[Opinion] Have you ever wanted to start a secret society?

Everyone's got one.

sheesh, alot of long windedness in this thread! If you want a short answer about this here it is: Secret Societies dont have much reason to exsit in a modern liberal democracy that takes religious pluralism for granted and they were secretive for a reason: to protect against government repression. Unless you live in an autocracy like russia or china, you are better off just have a friend group that plays DnD on Friday nights, because what existential glue is there keeping you together if everything you discuss can just be expressed freely without much consequence other than the side eye.

The only thing i really can think of is an agreement towards how things are discussed within the order when everyone meets together at an agreed time. And when outside of the order the members would speak freely without restraint to what the order rules are (unless stated otherwise by membership rules) with discussions during hours of official meeting times.

In this case, this could open the door to an online version of an order via skype or something like that. I see strong value in a ordered discussion as it fine tunes everyone to work in a more harmonic way.

This would elliminate the money limitation, but of course some people desire an order for magickal ritual. Im content with just intellectual conversation, not looking to judge but speak in a open minded fashion testing proposed hypotheses and proposed theories on matters discussed within the order.

This is inspired by the freemasons model which i like.

The benefit of such an order to have organized discussion would supersede the value you would get on a forum, because even though a forum may have rules and moderators to inforce them — this does not stop someone from presenting a emotional response to a proposed idea just because they personally think its stupid — also the admittance to everyone makes this happen since everyone has different goals in a public forum.

Theres pros and cons about both things. The pro in a open forum is that you get to engage with people that are not on the same page as you, so that you obtain a new perspective towards a matter that may possibly fine tune your understanding in a certain area of study.

One rule in a society during discussion which would hold alot of value is to accept the fact that any member may have expertise in a certain area of study (or ability) and may have high ignorance in a certain area of study (or ability), so the rule would be to understand this and make it a duty to educate your fellow brother or sister if you see lack of ability or ignorance in a specific area.

This would strength the utility of the society.

So for me i view a high ignorance in myself regarding how i engage in conversation with strangers who are nothing like me at all so that i can extract information from them. So to be in close contact with someone who is skilled at articulating their speech, this would hold much value to me if i was in a society with someone like that.

To moderate order in the society, that is if it did get larger, I would want to have an elected position like the Speaker of the House of Commons in Canadian Parliament to ensure rules are followed during the discussions. If rules are not followed then the one holding this elected position would have the duty to either discipline the member or start a vote poll to kick the member out of the society if they are excessively breaking rules.

If this would be a skype meetup, this elected official in the society would be the host of the meetings having power to mute members at anytime wether it be to discipline them or organize the conversation giving members floor time to speak. The ammount of general floor time would be something the entire order would have to vote on. I would propose the idea of also having a system to extend floor time under certain circumstances like for example if the person is an expert in the area of study.
